Default Gf wrecked the Z!! Total loss?

Good news is that no one was seriously hurt. So my gf was driving onto the on-ramp of the freeway when she lost control and smashed into a wall. The weather was rainy and the roads were slick. When she called me to pick her up I was horrified. All that I saw was the Z's hood crunched, the front bumper laying in the middle of the road, and the vehicle half way over the curb against a wall. My question is have any else totaled their Z? How much damage would it take? I have a 04 model. Both air bags popped out also. I really dont want the car to be repaired since I feel it will never be the same again, but Im afraid it would be in the best interest of the insurance company to repair it even if repairs cost $15000. Id rather get paid out so I can get a new Z.

Always good to walk away.

I don't think it's totalled. Sounds it's just sheetmetal damage. If under the hood it's okay, I doubt it is a total. (Could you post some pics??)

I hear you, and agree. But you'll probably not have that option. Just get it fixed and trade it.

Sorry, man, your GF is going to be owing you big time for a long time.

Good luck.

sorry to hear about that bro! Glad your girl was ok!!!

Just curious, what happens in a situation like that? It goes on her insurance and record right?? If not I'm never letting anyone drive my Z! I haven't yet anyway But I always wondered about that with my old car when I let my buddies take it. ?

I beleive points for your insurance follow your lisense, which follows the driver, not the car. but I could be wrong.

unfortunate about the car. push for it to be totalled, I hear sometimes they will push it over the edge if the person really complains. alot of times people dont want it to be totalled cause its more work for them to find a new car, and or take a loss cause no gap insurance.

You will probably have to push for the Insurance company to total it.
My wife had an accident in our honda pilot last Nov, and there was 15k of damage, to a 33k car, which was 6 months old. They wanted to fix it.
We had to fight the Insurance company tooth and nail to total it. It was the other drivers fault, a drunk driver changed lanes on the highway, and she landed in a ditch.
We walked away with minimal bruises.

The definition of insurance is Indemnity (Making you whole again) They do this with paying out as little money as possible so lets say your car takes 15k to repair to make it like it was or will cost 30k to get you a new one, there is no question the adjuster will have this car fixed. I will be like new with a bit of a shim If you have questions on how to get more money out of it and not get screwed pm me. I am an independent insurance agent (good Guy) and have dealt with claims for years.

Also you are correct points do in fact follow driver of the vehicle. More boring insurance information whenever someone borrows your car and states they have insurance...keep in mind that your insurance covers anyone you let borrow your car or family anytime your buddies insurance pays secondary so if you coverage is not enough the buddys insurance will kick in. And many insurance companies will try to surcharge you for this. Food for thought.

A good set of tires like toyo TS1s may have helped. i don't like buying tires for a new car with good rubber but glad I did. Much better in RAIN, COLD, SNOW

Depending on insurance company, it can be either 2/3 or 3/4 of the car's value in damages to declare a total. Mine uses 3/4.

One option that many insurance companies won't tell you about is that if you can get a salvage yard to buy the carcass for the difference between the damage estimate and the required total-out amount, they will declare it a loss. The salvage yard gets the car, you get two checks, one from your insurance company and one from the salvage yard. We just recently did this with a Mitsu Montero Sport and the Insurance company even found a salvage yard for us. We replaced the crunched Montero with an '01 Lincoln Navigator. (A comfy SUV for sure, even if SUV's are evil in the eyes of sports car drivers everywhere!)

BTW, you need to start making a list of all of the things your G/F has to do for/to you to make up for this.

Good Luck, and I'm glad to hear she was ok. A car is just a car and becomes surprisingly unimportant when someone gets hurt.

i really doubt your Z will be totaled. I have a 2004 Z Base model had about 18000 damage. It wasnt considered totaled and was fixed. The air bags themselves were about 6000. The body shop did a great job. If you live in Southern California. I would recommend you to Hi Tech Collision and Glass Centers. They got my Z back in the road in 3 1/2 weeks. Plus they always have Z that are being worked on from owners or Nissan dealerships.

Aww, sorry to hear about that. I got in a car accident on the freeway a couple months ago in my 2002 Toyota Celica. The damage amounted to about half the value of my car, but with a little persuasion, my insurance company was willing to consider it totalled.

Walked away without a scratch and got a very nice check from insurance. And that's how I got my Z.

You don't want a car that's been brought back from the dead. I say fight to get it totalled. It's worth a shot.

the guy that estimated the dmgs from my accident said about 8k. that was just from walkin around the car and i can promise that was way off.

it ended up being about 18-20k for the insurance co to fix up my 03 enthusiast.

the bodyshop owner says he thinks the guy who did the estimate might have gotten fired :-P
