Just a quick question I was hoping you guys could help me clear up.
I just got my new 05 Touring Z last week, and I took it out on the highway for the first time today.
I found that at 80mph and in 6th gear i'm still revving pretty high ( 3k rpm )...is this normal for everyone else, or should i be getting lower rpms in 6th gear at this speed.
Lemme know guys, anything would be appreciated, thanks.

I was surprised to see that at 80 mph I was at 3k. A little high for a torquey V6, so there goes the gas.
BUT, touch the throttle at 80 in sixth, and you're gone! Try that with a lesser car with fuel efficient gearing.
My old altima was at a hair over 3k at 90mph, so this surprised me, but I'll take it.

It shouldn't be surprising that 80MPH equals 3K rpm, considering that the car is geared for a balance of torque and efficiency at "highway speeds" which legally are between 55 and 70 depending on where you are. If they had geared the car as you all think it should be, you'd be at 800-1000 RPM in 6th gear at legal speeds and the car would have no pull at all, then you'd ***** because the car has no acceleration in 6th gear. It ain't a race car, it's a sports car.
You're probably getting 24 or so mpg at that speed so it all works out...
We redline at 6600, so it's still under half the cars potential.
Most 'normal' cars do 80 somewhere in the 2k's, but they probably dont have as high of a redline.

thanks for all the posts guys, appreciate all the help.
as long as everyone else is also experiencing the same situation then i feel as though i've got nothing to worry about, just kinda sparked some concern initially.
i guess you're right though kcobean...with the car geared at legal speeds in 6th...it would yield a fairly good rpm number...just have a hard time keeping it below the speed limit...as i assume most of us do...just a bit too tempting.
hope you all enjoy ur z's, cya on the road =)
