I have a base reserved and it's coming in december, but I've become worried with the lack of traction control, Viscous limited-slip differential, and Vehicle Dynamic Control. I'm pretty much car illiterate, but I have a basic understand what these various systems do, still I'm not sure how effective and necessary they are. I'm not the most experienced driver on the road (I'm only 17), so I'm not quite sure if the systems will help me avoid accidents. The main question I have is if it's worth to bump upto an enthusiast or performance model, or if they're totally worthless in a sunny climate such as San Diego?
Ok, you've got a few things to considere here. First of all, the systems, themselves; I'm 30 and when I saw that the base car came with nothing but anti-lock brakes (and maybe EBD?), My first thought was "death trap for younger people who don't know about or can't afford the systems". As for whether they help keep you out of accidents: yes, they do, pure and simple. At 17, it's good to be able to admit you're not the most experienced, and even if you do consider yourself a good, responsible driver, having a car like this tends to increase the testosterone flow to the right foot. I'm quite familiar with San Diego roads, and yes, I think these systems would be worth it there even though it hardly ever rains. These systems aren't only for wet weather conditions. There are a lot of very fun, very dangerous twisty mountain roads with blind corners out there that can get you in trouble very fast. My parents live out there, and my Dad has a '96 NSX, so I know a little bit about spirited driving in S.D. I have a Touring model on order and will be moving out there in a year or so. I was thinking of how I would drive in S.D. when I ordered the car. So, IMHO, I think it would diffinitely be worth it if you can afford to go up the scale a package or two; the TCS/VDC may be safety features, but the LSD is a performance enhancer, so its not like you're spending more money to granny out the car with just safety stuff. I'd also strongly recommend the side and curtain air bags. This is a great car that most people your age can only dream about, but look at the statistics for drivers your age; be smart and don't become one of them. God, I sound like my Dad; its finally starting to happen, and I don't even have kids yet!
