Top number is right tire, bottom number is left. I found this out when I had a slow leak in one tire. I was surprised because somehow I had expected it to go in order left, right but it's the other way around.

Mine was the opposite. I discovered this after I bought a nice digital pressure sensor, (which you should use anyways. I would never use the built in sensors as a reliable source. Mine are about 1.5psi off anyways.) But they are good for unexpected leaks and flats...

I can totally see someone driving down the road and getting a flat tire and being like "WTF?? why didn't the sensor tell me my tire was low?". They get out and change the tire. Just as they are about to finish up the sensor warns them of a low tire. That would be so friggin funny!

At 44psi, that's got to be a pretty hard ride. Also, keep in mind that as they heat up, the pressure rises. Mine are set cold to 35 (cold is when you're supposed to check and fill a tire) but if I take it out on the highway they will easily hit 40psi.

On my model - 35 lb recommended for both front and rear. Getting either too high or too low pressure can affect ride and wear. For Christmas I've asked Santa for some of those - wear and read gauges for my tires! How often I look at my tires - and say "too low" - check them and they are o.k. A slow leak can turn into a flat too easily.
