it is nice to see that the search function does work. now think about your question. what is another name for coolant? here is a hint, it is also called anti-freeze.

did that help?

I actually just let my car run over the entire winter period. Keeps the engine good, but goes through a bit of gas.

Not a good idea IMO. Moisture accumulates inside your engine during winter down-time. The only way to get rid of this moisture is to get your engine up to full operating temp and burn it off. If you just start your engine and let it run for a few minutes then all you are doing is circulating that moisture around in your engine - NOT GOOD.

Best you can do for your car before storage is a fresh oil change and fill your tank with gas. No need for gas stabilizer unless it's going to be more than six months. Also a good cleaning/wax job. If you have problems with moisture in your garage then put a moisture barrier under the car. Make sure your tires have good pressure - do not overfill. You don't have to worry about flat spots with today's radial tires. If you cover it make sure it's a breathable cover. Batteries suffer reduced life if not kept charged. Best to take the battery out and connect to a trickle charge (Batter Tender). Oh, and plugging the exhaust with steel wool is a good idea if you have rodent problems.
