Default Service Light!! Sos!!!

Alright I was driving today and noticed the Service Engine Soon light turn on, and my friend tells me there's something wrong with my car.
I thought it was telling me to get my oil changed, does anyone know why this light lit up? I have 2,660 miles and haven't had a single oil change yet, could this be the reason? Thanks in advance!

I wouldnt worry about an oil change, that typically comes around 3700 or so.. Do you notice any obvious issues, besides the SEL?

Did you just gas up the Z recently before you saw the light go on? If you did, it's possible you didn't screw the cap back on tight enough. Sometimes if you don't tighten the cap enough, gas fumes escape from the tank, and it can trigger the check engine light (hence the warning on the gas cap).

I agree with CelticPride2.

+2. The fuel system in this car is very sensitive. I usually make sure to give my cap 8-10 clicks to make sure it is tightly seated, otherwise I get an SES light.

In any case, warranty is a great thing. You should take advantage of it and let the dealership pull the code if you don't know how to retrieve and interpret it yourself. (I got quite good at this after my GReddy EVO2 install)

thanks guys! it was the gas cap. I gave it a click and it still showed up. So I was planning on going to the dealer this thursday, but after two clicks, it went away. I knew I had to make sure it clicked, but I guess one wasn't enough. Thanks for the help!

This same thing happened to me a month back. I spoke with Nissan Tech, one who I've actually come to trust, said that when the gas cap is loose, there is a lack of back pressure in the fuel system which causes some sensor to trip. Often times the SES light does not reset right away. The computer takes approximately 8 engine on/off cycles to reset the CPU.

Good deal...especially since the light went off on its own. I always thought that light wouldn't shut off unless it was reset by a service tech. Guess I was wrong.

If the system checks itself and the problem is no longer there, with some issues, it will shut itself off to show that the problem is no longer present. It can take up to 40 key cycles for the ecu to check the system again though. If it is not a loose gas cap it is best to let your dealer look at it rather than hope, but always check the gas cap first. Those tethers cause all kinds of problems, and you can not submit that as a warranty claim with out falsify some paper work. If a customer bought their car from us we usually give them one freebie and just internal the cost.

Good info here. Unfortunately I'm Oregon and we can't pump our own gas. I suppose I need to make a habit of checking the gas cap from now on.
