Unhappy CLUNKING tranny in nuetral

I'll have an audio clip posted up in the next day of it but until then:

I have a 2004 Z coupe 6 speed and it has 30k miles on it... i drive a lot. Anyways, i first noticed this last week when me and a friend went out taking pictures of my car. Here's what happened...

I put the car in nuetral, leave the car running and get out to take a few pics.. while taking the pics i hear a loud clunking noise coming from under the car, sounds like it is coming from the transmission.. kinda sounds like if you roll your knuckles over a wooden desk or something. It doesn't do it constantly but every 20 seconds you will hear a couple clunks back to back, almost like there is a bolt getting thrown around inside. The noise only goes away when i push the clutch down, and then when i release it you can hear it again..

Also, when the clutch is out, it sounds almost like a fan is on, its really loud, and when i push the clutch down... its quiet. I'm not sure if these two noises are related or not but it sounds like crap. I've also noticed the transmission is sometimes is a little notchy going into 2 and occasionally even 3rd and 4th.

I'm gonna be taking it into the dealership this week just for them to tell me its normal (hope they dont though). Anyone have any ideas of what the problem could be?

From reading on the forum, i think a lot of people have that "fan" noise i mentioned, but what about the clunk? Any advice is appreciated! Thanks

Mike

I took my car in last year for the clutch noise and they said it was normal. I didn't belive them so they pulled out a brand new car they had in the lot and started it for me. It did thesame noise.

A few other people I know have the same noise. I guess this is normal. Good Luck...

i have it, i'm pretty sure its normal. These transmissions make all kinds of noises, just something you gotta get used to.

Wow i just took an half hour to download that file, it's huge... but after listening to it i think it's safe to say that it normal, however i have no idea what it is... but i'll look into the whole tranny thing, and maybe i can find out what it was

It'll take me all day to DL that 148MB file from here at work. I'll try it from home later.

FWIW, when I start my car (garaged) in the morning and leave it in neutral while it warms up, the tranny always makes a few clicks or knocks initially.

I have that noise (among other tranny noises) and I went to the dealer and testdrove 3 other cars.... 2 did it and 1 didn't... I don't think it's "normal" I just think it's a "common problem" When my next oil change comes up I'm gonna ***** about the noise...

Another problem sometimes associated with tranny's and clutches is a worn throwout bearing. This problem is often characterized by a rumbling noise whenever the clutch engages.
