Picture this: You're cruising happily down the center lane of the interstate, in light traffic, but at speed (65?).

Then, all of the sudden, the car is front of you swerves slightly...you see various debris bouncing from under the car and scattered in your lane and the lane to the right.

You quickly check your left mirror for lane clearance. ****, blocked in! Your eye keys in on one large and very solid looking hunk of metal spinning in the right half of your lane from it's last victim and approaching rapidly...you have just enough time to jerk the steering wheel left and hope "spin right, dammit, right!"

CLUNK! You hear metal-on-metal contact but it looked like it was heading for the wheel. Why the metal sound you think?

Sorry to see the damage to your wheel, but could have been much, much worse. Good luck with the repairs.

You're both absolutely right...Whatever that thing was, if it were one inch over it could have shredded my tire. At 60. In traffic!

Not to mention the possible damage if I had pacman-ed it... I measured the distance from the edge of the tire and it was 6.5-7". Not sure I could've cleared that even at the stock ride height.

What is so odd to me is how soft it looks. Such a clean cut, like playdoh. But if you push on it, it's rock hard. Doesn't even wiggle a bit.

I don't know what to do with it now. Should I try to hammer it back in place or Dremel it off?

Metal becomes amazingly pliable at high speeds. Honestly, I'd leave it until you can have it looked at by a pro wheel shop, or I'd take this as a sign that a 19" wheel upgrade is in your near future.

If you can match the paint on the wheel, you could use the Dremel to smooth it, fill it with JB Weld, smooth it , sand it, and paint it. Even if you pounded it smooth, it won't fill the gouge completely.

It would be cheaper to just buy someone's used 17" wheel... they are like DIRT cheap and abundant on this board anyway

You can get a set of 17's with almost new tires for around $500... you may get lucky and find someone willing to sell you one

Exactly! I was planning on doing that after I burned some more rubber off the ol' potenzas though. They only have 2200 miles on em'.

That and I've got the car going into the shop tomorrow finally to have the headers and HF Cats put on...that's kinda eating into the 'discretionary' budget right now.
