Totally agree. I have driven many different vehicles over the years and by far, the Z's trany is the worst I have ever driven. Before anyone starts claiming that all sport's car drive that way, please drive some other vehicles and you will see.

Too bad we can't put a S2000 trany into the Z

I wouldn't say it's BS, My 04.5 had a sort of clunk when shifting from 1st to 2nd when the car only had a few hundred miles on it. I found a few people that said this is normal, so I gave it a few miles and it eventually went away. supposedly it was just the tranny breaking in. My car still only has 2900 miles on it, so only time will tell, but the tranny is really smooth now. I would say, give it a few mile and if it doesn't stop or gets worse, bring it back to the dealer.

S2K tranny's were recalled for 2000 and 2001 models. Also, the diff's on S2K's wear down prematurely as well.

i have the 05 tranny in my 04.5 with a little over 2k miles. My last tranny ground 2nd all the time, this one grinds first all the time. It also has the same clunks and rattles as my last tranny.

i have 2000 miles on the car. When its cold I get a clunk most of the time... when I shift, I can feel the gear going in. it is not smooth at all. The dealer I went to said I can get a second opinion from some other dealer.. and I plan to check it out either this saturday or wait for my 3000 oil change. Just to see if it get better.

do anyone know if its a problem if I was to lower the car and put wheels on? I have the springs and wheels but I am afraid if I put them on they will give me hard time telling me that the car has been modified... even though I didn't do anything to the engine or other modification.

Well ever manual tranny ive ever driven is a bit sluggish and clunky when its cold out. Definitely shouldnt be doing that much once it warms up to normal operating temps.

So far I put in ~ 3700 miles on my 05. The 1st to 2nd shift in the morning feels like I just ran over a metal lump on the shifter going into 2nd (It still goes in w/o too much trouble). I do get a small clunk going into 2nd, but I had that noise come from other manual cars and I presume its normal.

When the car is warm, the 1st to 2nd shift still has that irie metal lump feel going into 2nd, but its not as noticable. So far, I don't hear or feel my gears grinding.

the Z isnt really crap when it comes to the suspension... the Z isnt really to compare with other cars the way it is set up... The shifter goes directly into the trans so you feel every vibration... shifting into gear you feel everything...

its set up like a race car...

I was about to post the same thread. I have my new 350ZR for about 3 weeks now and 800 miles. I do feel that clunk feel from 1st to 2nd gear. Sometimes even 2nd to 3rd but that could just be my driving. It doesn't shift really smoothly but at times it does **** to 2nd with no clunk.

I was at the stop light today and shifted from 1st to 2nd with a clunk going into the gears. I shifted again w/o bringing the clutch up and it was much smoother the 2nd time. Try it, you'll feel the difference. There was no clunk the 2nd time. I do feel the car needs to be breakn into.

I'm glad I'm not the only one getting the same feeling on the tranny. I guess this car was just made that way.

Guys as Jason pointed out the tranny is direct and doesn't use a cable. It has much more positive engagement than the tranny in an S2k. Also handles more torque than almost any S2k tranny will ever see - requiring beefier parts. The clunking and various noises are inherent to this design (which is definitely not perfect).

I think Nissan should have prob switched to a cable linkage though...as the shifter vibration and clunkiness are 2 points of soreness in this car. Frankly I enjoy it though hahaha.

ackma72,

I get the clunk all the time in second gear especially when cold in the morning. Lately its happening when the car is warm.
i sometimes get the 3rd grind too.

Shifting from 1st to 2nd makes me feel like i am not shifting correctly (going through a metal lump).

What par to of LA do you live? I am in the covina area.

Jason,

How many miles and year is the warranty on the tranny for the Z?

btw, i have an 04.5 with 13 kmiles.

Tony

Is there anyone that had to replace or had some work done on the trany or anything else on your 05 model?

I have 3200 miles on my 05 and it does the same thing. When i keep the clutch in a little longer it doesnt do it though. your problem is the same exact as mine. Just gotta live with it. Its under warranty.
