Default my 1/8 mile track time and kills

well... I have never raced another car before, and I decided to hit up the friday night (legal) drag races at the stadium here in San Diego. Let me start by saying that this sh*t is FUN FUN FUN.

Needless to say, my technique is pretty bad I think, but I have no idea because I have never ever thought in terms of 1/8 mile. But my best time was

9.579 @77.32mph

ummm, does this suck or is this good?

Anyway... my kill list:
2002 audi s4
2000 pontiac firebird
1982 mazda Rx-7
2002 v6 mustang running NOS
and a......2002 HONDA S2000 bwahahaahh once again the stook falls!

Those who killed me:
1993 AWD eclipse boosting 16psi.

....And believe me, this was no close run, this guy smoked the living crap out of alot of people.

actually I think that kinda does suck, but your list of kills is respectable, so its all good.

what would be something that I know the Z can do on a 1/8 mile?

Also, am I supposed to wheel spin like a mad man? Cuz I tried clean launch w/no spin, medium spin and lots of spin and I kept getting 9.6 everytime!

I would imagine launch with rev around 3000 should be good, you want to just barely chirp the tires, a small skid type thing, not a full burn tho. just take it to the edge.

You beat an S4?!!! Those AWD are fantastic for Dragging! The S4 must not know how to launch! What was your best 60ft time? S4 have been know to achieve 1.8-2.0 on the average.

2.5 was my 60 foot time and 2.1 was the s4's 60 ft time. So yes the launch was much faster from the S4, but I really think that the Z is really strong between 4-6k. Additionally, there is something to be said about the short throw shifter. Im also a good shifter, just a bad launcher!

Well, that's pretty impressive that you're able to make up ~ 2-3 car lengths within the alloted length!

*cough* 1 car length *cough* ...

basically I got him by .2 secs on the 1/8, so I guess "kill" wouldnt be the best term...more like I punched him...

at any rate, could very high usage of the lanes have anything to do with bad times for everyone? I mean, the lanes were sooo slippery....and there were tons of guys who were putting some crap on their tires and doing some nasty burnouts...

Yes. I noticed that towards the end of the night, the track where I run at, starts to get slippery and people started to have poor 1/4 mile times. My 60ft times tend to get worse after 2-3 hrs dragging and waiting in line .

one last thing, the stats on the s4 say that its 1/4 mile is 14.2, so i would imagine that the Z at about 14 secs would be a consistently good challenger...

I agree. It boils down to the driver for this race.

alright guys, so give me some quick and dirty tips for maximizing my times. I really have NO formal information for effective launches and subsequent shifting

About 30 psi in your street tires. Do not go through the water. Do a burnout to get the crap off the tires. Find your sweet rpm launch for the track conditions of the day. 1500-3000 rpm. Feather the clutch and apply gas until you get a good hook.( i do this on street tires and get a good 2.0 60ft doing this). Shift gears on the downside of your hp peak(usually redline) . granny shift or power shift if you are comfortable at it.

I am still learning after a couple years of doing it.

haha yeah no water, youll just spray it up onto your wheel well and it will drip onto your tire afterwords. putting you in a bad place, plus you should have no problem breaking traction without the help of water.

plus the Z has the LSD so we can do burnouts!!! cars without them just look like morons when they do burnouts and only one tire "burns".

Default just saw your thread

what you can't see under the hood can still beat you be careful
as depressing as this is to admit yes i finally lost a race...
i also think i was set up...
i'm at work and my buddy mike says theres a mechanic with a talon that wants to race you in back. should have stopped right there when he said mechanic..right..i said ok and looked at the car nothin special actually the car itself looks like it wasn't taken care of had alot of miles on it yes it was an allwheeldrive with a turbo.. stock should have been no problem until he pulled away in first like i was standing still. the 1st run i did everything i could do wrong spun the tires hit into the rev limiter and missed 2nd gear it was ugly sorry guys. i did make it respectable on the second run and took off perfectly and hit all my shifts on the money..but still lost by a half a car length. note it was only a little longer than a 1/8 of a mile but damn does that car grab off the line i think in the 1/4 mile plus i would have taken him.. by the way turned out the car was a 92 talon awd with 20 pounds of boost and some other **** done don't quite now what he was not volunteering info
moral to the story theres always a faster car be careful out there
sidenote:confusious say if it look to good to be true it i is watch out for shitboxes

actually, from what I have been reading, thats only one of a few cars that are big time sleepers. The AWD is definetely the reason those cars have any advantage (like the eclipse I lost to) and there arent too many different light AWD cars out there.

Were these times above sea level? If so that would account for the slower times, while beating those cars. In a race with the S4 you would be at a distinct disadvantage in an 1/8th mile race. With a 2.5 60 ft time you would be hard pressed to make up the distance of an AWD launch by the time you got to the end of the 1/8th mile.

I disagree due to first hand evidence. The s4 had a fabulous launch, (well so did I) and I pulled away. There is no contest. I pulled away. The only thing you could probably say is that I am a quick power shifter....
