If you remove the rear rotors you will see that the parking brake activates shoes inside the DRUM part of the rotor.

I always put the car in first or reverse. I only use the handbrake on an incline. In that case I like to depress the clutch once I've pulled the brake to take the load of the transmission.

I leave in 1st and pull ebrake.
I deff keep in gear though because I have had an instance where the ebrake did not hold the best years ago on another car

That wasnt my point at all. My point was you never assume a weapon is unloaded...just as you should assume a car with a MT is always in gear. If you always assume a weapon is loaded you have less chance of accidentally discharging it and killing yourself or someone.

Smart people put it in gear and apply the e-brake to keep it from rolling away.

Its really not that hard to comprehend.

Which is probably why it lay festering for 3 years. BTW, set the emergency brake in the winter and it is liable to freeze up. And if the brake is lame, it adjusts at the handle, not the wheel.

i used to do 1st plus hand brake but one of my co-workers told me to do 3rd+hand brake (unless on a hill then 1st). This way even if you drop the clutch accidently on startup while in third he said it will not jump much and just stall. Anyone want to agree or disagree with this?

I put it in gear and pull the e-brake. If I am parking down hill I put it in reverse, if I am parking up hill or level ground it goes in first.

ALWAYS put the car in 1st and use the hand brake. Regardless if the road is flat or not, this way you will be in the habbit... The problem with not putting it in 1st gear when parking on flat streets is that you will get in a habbit of doing so and could do it on a inclined street, where your emergency break could go out and your car could cause some serious damage if not actually kill someone....

Im surprised the GM even agreed to pay anything, this was your fault for not checking what gear your car was in when you started it. Everytime I get into my car, i throw it into neutral before starting. This should be a HABBIT for anyone who drives manuals...
agree always throw into neutral before startup. it mentions this in most car manuals to prevent what happen to you. That sucks though.
I always put it in first or reverse depending on the hill decline and the parking brake.

Wow @ the two responses trying to blame the tech who fixed your car.

1. Why didn't YOU check to see what gear it was in before you started in?
2. Where was your right foot during this, it should be on the brake as you release the handbrake.
3. If anyone paid for any amount of your mistake you are super lucky

And I didn't realize so many people kept it in neutral, bad habit!

I am sure you have gotten corrected already (I stopped reading posts after the two people talked about crashing at the dealer) but.. You obviously do not understand how most modern day parking brakes work. Inside the hat of the rotor (rears only) is 2 shoes which resemble a drum brake but smaller, there only purpose is to be the mechanical parking brake.

Yeah, just scares me at how many don't put it in gear. I guess I will never park behind a 350z on an incline.

In any case, the reason why I ask is because I was at the dealership today to get my oil changed and the mechanic left the car in first when he turned off the car. I get into my car and started in up and didn't realize that it was in first. So when I took my foot off the clutch, the car jumped. Luckily, the car was parkd right next to some rocks in the nissan parking lot and guess what, my front fender got damaged! I talked to the general mgr and he told me that since I drove it, it was my responsibility. My response was that I gave the car to them in a certain way and I expected the car back in that way, ie turn the car off and keep it in neutral, plus the car was parked right near the rocks and they were negligent in those aspects and they should pay for it. Long story short, he tells me he will split half and said he would have his guy charge 800..ie i pay 400. I shoped around this afternoon and I'm quoted 300-400 for the job. Mind you, this is not a major dent, or anything..just some scuffed paint and what not.

I guess my next question is what should I do about this? It seems to me that the gm is tryin to pull one over me and overchargin me so that he would not have to pay. Should I use my guy and send him the bill for the other half? Contact Nissan customer service?

no offense but you should stick to driving an auto. you must be a tard if you don't check if your in gear or not before letting go of your clutch even if you left it in neutral last

^^^^. The purpose for having to depress the clutch when starting the car, is for safety. If you could start it in gear without the clutch depressed, the car would jump, like it did when you let the clutch out.

If I was the dealer, you would have gotten nada. The tech parked the car correctly, not wrong like you did.

BTW, when I posted this old thread within another thread I had no idea it would take on a new life.

I just throw it in neutral and pull the handbrake, mostly because im lazy and im used to always leaving in neutral. I know if I leave it in first ill never remember that i did and end up letting the clutch go as soon as i start. lol and thats not good.

You need some retraining. I don't how old you are, but even old dogs can learn new tricks. BTW, I'm 70 years old. Learned how to drive on a three on the tree. Technique was the same 54 years ago. Can't figure how so many folks get it wrong now
