I'm 17, I've been saving for a year now, aiming for $15000 downpayment, currently have $6000. Should have 15 grand by Feb 06. Anyone else like me?

I'm 19 and I just bought a leftover 04 Touring, 6 speed, black, with burnt orange leather with everything but navi. I got a great end of month deal, at least I think so, $29,500. I put $15k cash down.

I mean I know I'm making a big mistake by buying such a nice car as my first car and at this age. But, I'm really sick of seeing people 16-21 have their parents buy them nice cars such as the Z which they don't deserve. And when I asked my parents if they could help me buy a decent looking car above 14k and I agreed to pay for it with THEIR help and guess what they said, NO. After that I just got mad and told myself I'll do it myself. And so I am. At this rate it'll happen. Now I know I'm making a big mistake, I should be saving this money for college or after college and all that, but this is my dream and my choice.

It's just a car
Not like honor, respect, trustworthiness things that are earned the hard way over time.
Write the check or make the monthly payments and the car is yours ... it's just a thing.
You can't buy honor, respect, or trust.
You've got to decide what's more important - buying an education or a car ... easy choice for most here ... and I bet it wouldn't be the car.

whatever, just get the car. You guys need to realize that no one`s gonna take their money at age 17 and put it into a house
.. as long as their parent still provide for them, who cares? If anything we should be congratulating him on getting a Z and saving money on his own. Think of it this way, him saving enough money for a down payment and making the payments on his own, is better than his father buying it for him and paying for literally everything.

God, its amazing the maturity level between a damn high schooler and being 3 years into college. Sheesh. I never noticed it until now, guess it creeps up on you.

First of all, you will NEVER get a 17 year old to understand the wisdom of a 35 year-old.
Secondly, I do not believe either extreme is necessarily better, be it blowing all your cash in one fell swoop, or scrounging every penny and living like a beggar.
You never know when life will turn on you. It has happened to me, I have seen it happen to many others. Tragedy can leark around the corner. You don't want to regret not taking advantage of a present opportunity in hopes of "something better" in the future. Likewise, you don't want to be left high and dry should you fall onto unforseen harsh circumstances. The truth is that at any stage in life, you should plan for the future AND live for the present. If you want to take half your savings and spend it on a car and invest the rest, that might be the smartest way to go. Not doing it at all, will deprive yourself of present gratification. Blowing it all can set yourself up for future stress. If your financial future looks good with a reasonable amount of predictability, you may want to go ahead and take the chance at spending more of the money. Look at the risk/benefit ratio of any decision, then go about your business.
