Thump When Shifting
I just took delivery of an 05' Performace 6spd a few days ago and I'm loving it so far.
One thing is bothering me though. It seems that whenever I perform a relatively "hard" shift, I get a "thunk" or bump type of sound from the rear end. It sounds almost like a bump in the road..
Is this a common thing? I don't remember hearing it when I was test driving...

The shifter and tranny will get smoother with age, it will clunk during "hard" shifts especially at high rpm, it likes to be shifted "softly" when new. It took over a year for mine to get "smooth", now after almost 30k miles it's very smooth.

Hmm, already driving it hard before the break-in period is up. Your car is still fairly new. Like it was said before it will most likely soften as it breaks-in.
In a way, Risk is sort of right, you should really be following the instructions in the manual for the break-in period. You might be putting unnecessary stress on your engine and tranny which could result in a new tranny in 10k.

I'm hoping it clears itself up over time. It sounds like there's some play in the rear end somewhere....

I have the same sounds with my 2005 Performance model that I picked up earlier this month. There are a few other sounds that I attribute to "newness" as well. From what I've been lurking, er reading, this is normal. I'm not sweating it, I figure I've got a warranty and if there is an engine or tranny problem Nissan will fix it. In the meantime I'm going to break it in properly. After the break-in if there is a problem, I will find it! I seems reasonable that it takes some time to break everything in. Its EXTREMELY difficult for me to keep it under 4K rpm, but I've still got about 700 miles to go. I just love the way this car drives and sounds. I'm very much looking forward to 1200 miles to see what this car can do. A sports car should be a pleasure to drive and a pleasure to behold. The Z is both! Rich
