Yup, like a turbo can be a quick way to get alot more power, but its not always linear and you loose some tactability in the driving. If done really well though a turbo can be of benefit...same thing with porting. But when your dealing wih car audio, orting is simply an easy way to make it sound louder.
It all depends on your music taste really.
A sealed enclosure has good sustain, range, and accuracy: good for jazz/classical. I prefer them myself for most types of music due to the high accuracy. If you listen to music with lots of fast drumming, use a sealed box.
A ported enclosure is good if you want to save money on an amp because it plays louder. but it's not very accurate and when played loud at certain frequencies, the port can whistle. I personally do not like the sound of ported enclosures. The range on these is average but a few dB louder in the range of the port.
Bandpass boxes hit hard in the frequency ranges the box is tuned to but are weak in others. These are best suited to rap/r&b style music due to the hard not-so-fast heavy bass hits found in those types.
In the bandpass and ported enclosures, the speaker is under less control due to the decreased air pressure in the box, so a sealed box will sound better louder, especially with fast double bass drumming such as that in metal music.
In all honesty, the sealed box will give the best all around performance, and it is the simplest to build: design the enclosure's internal volume to match the recommended volume for your speaker and you're pretty much set.
