Default good spot for a radar detector...

is it possible to put my detector in the empty Navigation compartment? will it be less effective there? is it best to just put it in the center of my windshield?

It has to have a clear view of the road - even some windshield tints can block the signals.

I thought the same but its not true. mine goes off anywhere in the car. Its only a 40 whistler. I've had it on the floor and it worked. It works from the rear and the opposite side of the freeway. Having it on your dash only makes sense and can enhance your radar detection so its a no brainer. I put mine all the way forward left by my pillar and had it hard wired so everytime I turn on the car.

Search the Audio/Nav/Radar forum. There was a good writeup about doing a stealth install of Valentine V1 in a Z, and I did it and love it. That thread is like 2 years old so you might have to search it carefully.

It might "go off" anywhere in the car but its effectiveness is GREATLY compromised if it can't "see" the road. The higher up in your car, the greater its range.

Valentine One sells a unit that has a small remote display that you could put in the Nav. but you still have to put the receiver somewhere where it has a clear view of the road.
