I've owned two eclipse turbos---95 coupe gsx and 96 gst convertible--loved both. The new Eclipse is comparable to those, the ones from 2000 to 2005 are UGLY.

But to compare both--well the Eclipse you can drive all year round, the Z is only for non winter. Previously owning an S2000 I will not have a RWD car for the winter. Price wise --for 1000 more you can get a base 350z (24000. new at Carmax) So it comes down to preferance--if someone has a family and wants a sports car--either the Eclipse or RX-8 is a good buy, then next level would be th G35. Personally what would be cool is to have the Eclipse for a runner and a Z for a toy!

Just want to add also, wait a year for that model to be out, both Eclipses and the S2000 were first model years and had problems!

its an 01 996 turbo.

the 996 turbo is presently in its last year, we'll get the new 997 turbo next year (06).

Hopefully it'll still be based on the GT1 spec 3.6L dry sump TT engine, and not the new 997S wet sump (wet sump, crap consumer) motor.

Most expect at leat 500HP.

I'm happy with my 500HP 996. Maybe if i get bored i'll crank the boost up more, get the K24 turbos and shoot for 700HP, but honestly, the car is so capable and competent i cant complain. Passing/acceleration is warlike. However, even with the short shift kit, the Zs shifter is butter smooth and has shorter throws. While i love my Zs tail out antics, powesliding a TT is a euphoric experience. Even though the rear is slipping, the rotational loss of inertia is much less. When the Z oversteers it loses speed rapidly and drifts. When the turbo oversteers it automatically tighten the line - and thus regains traction in an uncanny progressive matter...drifting can be fast too!
