look at the price he's asking... sounds good... until you find out its a SALVAGE. then he goes on saying, ITS SUCH A GOOD DEAL. well it was an exterior, left fender damage... but still. 20k for salvage??

Ultimately, we found one in perfect condition for her price of $12,000. We knew it was a great deal, so we took it.
Sure, we saw TONS of salvaged vehicles in the $10,500 - 11,000 range, but that is simply way too overpriced for a salvage. Patience is the key, just know that you don't have to (and shoudn't) buy salvaged.

As for insurance companies covering salvage'd vehicles, sure they'll cover you. Insurance companies will never turn away business (as long as you don't wreck all the time). But the fact that it's salvaged, they'll charge you a good amount more than normal. So props to sisco534 for bringing up that point.

We came upon car after car after car that was totally and utterly overpriced, people unwilling to negotiate, saying "Honda's have good resale value, so I'm not going to budge."

How fast you learn, well, that all depends on you. You will do better if you understand how all the mechanical parts work...from flywheel to clutch and synchros, etc. Read "how manual transmissions work" on www.howstuffworks.com
Any idiot can make a manual car "go", while never ever stalling it. It's called burning the clutch... it smells bad and it's costly, so try not to do it.
My brother in law taught me a long time ago, I got it down in a couple of hours (on flat surfaces), and it took me a few days to be able to consistently start on an uphill slope. It still freaks me out and pisses me off when people pull right up to my bumper when I'm on an uphill slope.
