Cool, I would try it but our chip is in the plastic, not on the key. But you got me thinking!

lol 102 views and 1 reply... Im interested in how the chip works does it have to be physically connected to the key or is it a transponder like ezpass. I dont have a Z Im savin but i have a 2000 sentra w/o the chip and the valet key is the perfect shape for the bottom side of the nissan key fob.

Based on comments in the manual about interference with other devices,etc.. I'd speculate its a transponder

if it were a transponder, wouldnt it need a power source? I believe it needs to be attatched to the key and recieve power from the ignition.

No, the antenne is around the ignition hole. It just detects a coded chip. Much like a card to get in and out of a parking garage or like the speed pass for Exxon.

how is the chip mounted to the key is it soddered in or just glued to the plastic. Has anyone tried making a copy of the key and seing if it works with a real key in proximity to the column?

The chip is located behind a molded cap in the plastic coating. It can be removed if one is careful. A non coded key will start the car with a coded key near the column. I have tried this and it works (this is how most resolve the remote start problem). I am waiting on an extra remote to butcher that I bought off ebay. I am doing this mod. I have a uncoded key already cut and ready for surgery. The only problem with this is it will cost some money for the dealership to hook up to Consult II to reprogram all the transponders to your car. The remote can be done without Consult II. I have service manual and can provide directions if needed. So far the key cost $35 and the remote cost $15. The key programming will cost between $0-$60 depending on how good you can sweet talk your dealer. The remote programming wont cost anything, as you can do it yourself.

why not remove the transponder from the key, and place it inside the FOB if theres room. nothing needs to be reproggrammed. but you do risk your key and you have to get the transponder out somehow.
