Default Heads up on 15,000 mile service!!

Just took the Z in for an oil change. Before going, I took a look in the Nissan recommended service manual that I got with the car. Under the 15,000 mile service, it recommends changing the oil, replacing the in-cabin micro air filter, lubricating the prop shaft and changing the engine filter, as well as inspecting a host of other things... The service adviser tells me that he can do it "all" for $150. Before I say OK, I ask how much the items would be seperate. He says:

"Oil: $24.95, Lubricate prop shaft $21, in cabin micro filter $70 (installed), engine filter $30 (installed)....." Tells me it should take 2 hours.

Well I don't have that much time so I go to the parts counter and ask for an engine air filter and micro filter. I am told by the parts tech that there IS NO MICRO FILTER in the 350Z. So why would I pay $150??

I go to the service advisor and tell him. He says "Really, I did not know that". OK, I will give him the benefit of a doubt. I only want the oil change and prop shaft lubricated.

I get the car back in less than 30 minutes. "That was fast!", I tell him. "Yes", he says, "the service tech told me the prop shaft lubrication does not apply to the 350Z".

Bottom line: I walked in willing to fork over $150 for the 15K service and ended up with an oil change and $11 engine air filter. Let the buyer beware.

I know some of you are thinking "I already know that.... You should have done some more reading...." Well, I have to admit, I should have. I just want to help others from getting burned.

I am curious what you mean by "15K warranty"? Did the dealer perform all the service at no cost to you?

Exactly what I was thinking. You are psychic!

Seriously though, the service part of the manual is standard for all nissan cars. There are many * in there and if you look at the bottom of the page it will say *does not apply to 350z or *only applies to frontier, etc..

So for your next service, look it over carefully and you will find that not many things actually will apply to the Z.

And another heads up for ya...there are some service things you must do that are not in the manual like change your differential fluid (at least I don't think that's listed). Basically the touch and go things that have to be changed at different intervals (based on how you drive) are the
Fluids: Clutch, brake, transmission, lsd, power steering, coolant, oil (and filter);
Brakes: Pads and rotors;
Battery;
+ Tires.

So make sure YOU have a service schedule for each one of them.

Other notables are: Plugs, belts, and radiator cap (but those ARE listed.)

Tells you a lot about your service folks now doesn't it.

Your service guy is nothing but an idiot. I would contact the Service Manager ASAP!

The Z DOES NOT have a propellor shaft no an in cabin microfilter. All is needed is an oil/filter change and inspection of a few things.

I hate stupid dealers that have no clue WTF they are doing but act like they have been working with NIssan for 30+ years!

Earlier this week, I also went in for my 15k service. I was quoted about $150 (it was "cheaper" because I didn't need an air filter). I was like, so what's in this 15k service? He babbled on and on about each fluid, etc.

Me: So basically it's just an oil change and you "check" everything else?
Him: .... yeah but it's important
Me: Okayyy.... just gimme the oil change.
Him: .........but... ok fine.

Yeah, screw that.

The first service that is the porker is the 30K service, thats radiator flush, diff flush, ect.

BTW, dealer wants $599 for the 30K service on my wifes Maxima, I had to laugh.

Well if your like me, you do your own oil/filter and air filter change.

I would say all that is needed is,

Radiator Flush
Diff Flush
Tranny Flush if automatic
Brakes checked

So maybe in the $100-200 range.

guys i totally agree,

no need to get any service done until the 30,000 service, where they basically flush coolant, lube all hinges, oil change, and replace air filter (which in a lot of cases don't even need)

services are such bull$hit, they are all inspections and you and i both know they just look at it and just take it for a test drive.

Flushing the radiator coolant doesn't sound that bad. I've done it on my civic before. It's basically like an oil change.

Please do not pay someone to replace your stock air filter.......... That's just sad hehe.

its easier than an oil change.. just unscrew the drain plug under the radiator and unscrew the bleeder plugs on the hoses and watch it drain

Shouldn't the 15k be covered under warranty? Or are they trying to do these "add on specials"
