2006 Z gets an all new tranny!!!
I'm kidding about that. I don't know yet but I was wondering a few things...
With all the probs with current and more so with past year models, if Nissan said they were going to be using an all new or totally reworked tranny for the '06 models and if you were in the market to buy a New Z either a leftover '05 or new '06 in the Spring of 2006, do you think you would be any better off reliability wise by getting the '06 or taking your chances with a discounted '05 assuming they would still have any left on April '06 (which I doubt). I'm not talking about any of the cosmetic changes to the '06, which are minimal at best but just the reliability issues.
Anyway, this is what I was thinking...
The '03 arguably had the most issues with it's tranny because it was a first year car. The '04 still had many of the '03's problems because I believe that by the time Nissan realized they had a serious reliability problem with their '03's that most of the '04 models had already been built and or on cargo ships, which is why the '05's seem to have the fewest problems of all.
So what I was also wondering is if Nissan used an all new tranny in the '06 how much better off would I be buying a '06 as opposed to an '05? I mean since the '03 had problems cuz it was a first year run car, the tranny on the '06 would also be a first year and unproven design which could be as bad or worse than the '03, then again it could be a lot better than previous years as well.
As far as trannies go, if the '06 was all new, I feel it would be a coin toss to decide whether to buy an '05 or '06.
On one hand you can get an '05 for less money but run the risk of those tranny problems. On the other hand you can pay more for an '06 with the promise of better reliabilty. Then again a lot of dealers are like politicians, so I guess nothing is a guarantee anyway.
It's like what do you buy, something that has a track record of problems that seems to be getting a little better each year or buy an all new design that 'promises' to be more reliable?
Or go with plan/car B or C?

I like plan C where you wait for the 07 because it will have less problems then the 06. Then there's plan D where you wait until 08 because that one will have less problems then the 07....

and then Plan E where you wait unitl 09 because it will have less problems than 08!!!
cars are going to have issues, and the 05 haven't been out long enough to show some troubles that they will have. Just go buy your car!!! you have to remember that there a threads stating all the problems the car is having yet, there aren't threads with polls where there are people with no problems!!! therefore there is an unbalanced view of a problem with the car......
i have an 04 for more than a year and have had no problems at all!!!

honestly i dont think nissan is going to solve the problem...if anything theyll continue to "put duct tape over the parts" and call the problem solved.
im lookin at 05-06 z or 05 g35c myself. im holding back from the z because i see ppl gettin 3 or 4 trannies in 1-2 yrs of owning it. that scares me because the car will be a daily driver.

LOL I get yer point. I can't wait that long to get a new car:-P
I'm wondering if I will even have to worry about deciding between an '05 and an '06. I mean what are the chances they will even have any new base model 6 speed (red) '05's available at the end of March anyway? If they don't realease the '06 until later this year (Septemberish) I might have a small chance I suppose of finding an '05.

Do a search on this forum and you will find more info available about the 2006 model. There is more than just the "minor" visual changes (more HP for example).

Then again, I heard in 2007 the Z is going to have a V12, 1000HP and only come with 2 gears (low and high)...just like in the old Out Run Arcade game.

Well i think the obvious choice would be to buy an 06 if they specifically mentioned "revised transmission" or some sort, but that isnt the case. The 05's seem to have the majority of qwirks fixed from previous years, and my transmission has been fine.

Now I'm not saying that means anything for sure, but it kind of makes me wonder what's up.

I've done roughly 40 drag passes, 1 performace school event @ Buttonwillow @ 110+ F, dynoed it roughly 4 times, daily driven @ 13,200 miles (I owned my Z for 8 months) and the only problem I have encountered so far is a noisy tranny (the typical throwout bearing noise, since I left the dealer lot!).
I'm pretty sure the 05 tranny ain't that bad............, better question is how long will the clutch last.

If you wait too long then, by the time you get a Z Nissan will have changed the body style and then you will feel outdated. All my current cars are one body style old already. This Z at least I have a few years with it new looking style. So I would say get the 05 for cheaper unless you want those minor upgrade in the 06 model. So far mine hasn't giving me any problems yet.
