i asked this same question a year ago and had a few responses. have anyone had their Z stolen without the use of keys? I keep having dreams that when I return to my Z, its gone!

I thought we have a chip in the key, and it can't be started without the chip...

I imagine someone could put the Z on a flatbed or just tow it away, then smash a window and strip it for parts... but not drive off.

Not sure about this, maybe someone else could elaborate.

Alot of new cars have chips now but they are still being stolen. I don't see how our car would be different. With so many ppl owning Zs, it a only a matter of time that the demand for parts increase.

I guess my whole point of this tread to get a sense if that trend is starting.

Saw a show on a chop shop.

They had a master car stealer teaching younger "students" on how to steal cars.

To get into cars with chip keys, he had this thing that looked like a gun with a small needle attached to it, he would then stick the needed into the door and open it. No alarm at all.

Once in the car, he finds where the wire going to the alarm is, plugs a laptop into the wires, and uses a stolen/warezed dealership maintenance software to disable the car alarm.

Then he would bring out this big cain ring with gereric keys of different types of cars. He finds the nissan 350Z key and starts the car and goes.

No alarm went off at all. That is why people get after market car alarms. It's the same reason why there are more hacks/virises for Internet Explorer. The hackers target the most used browser.

So if you have a stock car alarm, there is more of a chance that car theifs will have the right software/tools to disable your stock alarm.

As everyone knows anything can be stolen regardless of what security one has, the best thing for theft is good insurance coverage and or Gap insurance.

if I got my car stolen, I'd want them to strip it so I never find it again...rather get a new car after that...

My engineer buddy told me that the Nissan chips are simple resistors(not sure what that is) but he said it's not hight tech at all. I wish the Z had the Mercedes SL cards. That way we would need a key =).

Yeah, I have read at other Z forums that tjey have gotten their Zs stolen. The theifs are getting in by the door handles. They have devices to bypass the chip in the ignition. The best security is to have theft and gap insurance. If they steal my Z I would not want it back, take it and keep it!

All the cases that I have heard of where the Z was stolen have been under suspicious circumstances; i.e. the owner could not account for all his keys, a friend or acquaintance had access to the keys, the owner was behind on his payments or had other financial difficulties. It's way difficult to steal the Z by breaking in and starting the car without keys. If one is stolen it is most likely towed off and stripped at a chop shop.

Anyone have LoJack?

I have an issue with it being "missing". I got it installed a few weeks after I bought the car. The installer wouldn't let me know where it was installed (company policy). Then I had an after market stereo installed and then removed (car went back under lemon law). I scheduled to have LoJack removed and reinstalled in 05. Well LoJack installer came out and claims it's not in old car anymore. Accused stereo installer of removing it accidentally. I called installer and had him check stereo parts (still not in new car yet). Nothing. Drove to old car and verified it's not it car.

Since I can't ever guarantee it was in the car in the first place and I trust the stereo installer with keys to my house and $100 in cash in the center console I think LoJack JACKED me. I want them to activate it and see what they find (either it's dead, in my car, or in someone’s car whole stole it from me). Either way it's not my problem it the cops find it. Right now I am still in arguments with them.

Anyone verify their LoJack by actually seeing it? I hear it's a black box the size of a deck of cards with an FCC sticker on one side and ground and +12VDC wires coming out. Nothing more...

Any thoughts?

Unhappy

kinda ironic this topic came up....this project Z by one of the local tuner shops in hawaii was stolen and then found within a day.if their Z can be stolen from a busy mall parking lot, then I'd say just about anything is possible. (although the circumstances in the theft may indicate either an inside job or something involving the previous owners keys).

With the way they are selling, its getting there. And if honda's with key/chips can be stolen, why not Zs?
