Default 300ZX engine vs. 350Z

Besides the obvious aspect of 2 turbos on the 300zx, what are the differences in the engines? Of course the 350Z has a higher compression ration and all that, but which engine is really better? Which one has more potential, if they were both forced induction? Might be a dumb question, but I'm curious.

It would be difficult to judge the FI potential of the 350z motor because it wasnt intentionally designed for that, whereas the 300zx motor was.

CVTCS, drive by wire, intake, exhaust.

I dont compression ratio for ZX, but for the 350Z it is 10.3.

I raced a 300ZX-TT from a start and buy 70 I had him beat by at least a car length, if not more. Of course, I should have since I'm pushing 370 to the wheels.

the VG30 engine weighs like 100 lbs more than the VQ35

it is capable of producing more hp on stock internals

what power level are you looking to make.

IMO it is absolutely not worth it at all to get a VG30 and put it in the 350Z

you can put twin turbos on a built up VQ35 and make just as much power, be lighter weight, and cost less. There'd be a lot of custom work involved with putting a VG30 engine in a 350Z. This topic comes up once a month these days - as if anyone is actually going to do it.

alright, that helps.

i wasnt looking at putting the engine in a 350z, just curious which car would have more potential. just curious, really. those newest responses helped a lot. i dont even have a Z, but I am looking at cars in the price range, so I thought I'd do some research. i dont want to make crazy horsepower numbers, but i would like to have a turbo z. didnt know if it would be better to get a 300zx that was turbo fromt he factory, or put a kit on a 350.

yeah the 300ZX TT engine has more potential

the 300ZX TT is also heavier and doesn't handle as well as the 350.

It's actually more of a drag car

the 350Z is more of a road course car

yeah the $40-45k (when it was brand new) 300ZX TT with 300hp and 7000 rpm redline won against a $28k non-turbo 350Z with 287hp and 6600rpm redline

impressive....

that particular episode should have raced an original 240Z against a 350Z

since all the other cars were pretty much the first generation cars

The 350Z would have pulled like 10-15 car lengths on the 240Z and the point that show was trying to make would have been defeated

The 300ZX TT is an impressive car, just because it cost more NEW then ours do now, and has a little more HP, and a little more redline, doesnt make it some slouch that is unimpressive Sentry65...I dont know if you are trying to say it isnt impressive compared to our car because of those things, remember the ZX is over 10 years old, came with alot more creature comforts then the 28K base model Z you are referring to, our car is BRAND NEW, packed with technology, and is very much lighter. If we had same HP and redline as a ZX we would win, but we dont, if the ZX had our weight, it would be really fast, you gotta understand the cars are pretty even matched (I think the ZX runs 14.2-13.8, isnt that exact same as a Z?), they are just better in their own ways....

Now back to thread topic, its simple to realize the ZX has more potential out of the box thanks to it already being FI....kind of depends on what you would want, if you want a car that is fast, and can be made alot faster with just a few mods, ZX is for you, throw on a BC, Intake, exhaust, and you have quite a bit more power, but downside is you have more then likley 70K + miles, dated interior, dated exterior, and a not so more reliable car. With the New Z, not only do you get almost identical performance, and better in some areas, but a super styish road racer....if you build the motor and add some forced induction, you have a car that is 10x better then any ZX could be.......IMO.

Really what are you looking for!? BTW is your name Ian? Mine is.

The VG30DETT on stock internals has been known to exceed 550-600 RWHP and some higher so even with an FI 350Z I would be careful as you may get your a$$ handed to you.

The potential for HP on a VQ35 is still unknown as not many have gone further than 450 or so on a constant basis like phunk did.

That is engine for engine if you are looking at buying on or the other you have to take into account age and expense to work on the 300ZX it is a pain to work on and expensive.

no, the point in that episode was to show how much faster older cars are than the newer ones. So what do they do? They pick the fastest most expensive Z ever and pit it up against the current offering and show that it's a whopping .2 sec faster in a straight line even though it used to cost 50% more

Nevermind that all the other Z's in stock form would have lost by quite a bit

the 300ZX itself is an impressive car

It's that particular episode and the context it was in.

They were saying how cars these days are so much heavier and have more hp, but are probably slower than the older, lighter models with less hp.

The 300ZX TT vs 350Z is totaly opposite of that

the 350Z is lighter, less hp, 2/3 the price. 300ZX TT's at the time were corvette territory in price. The car was a performance monster.

I saw that episode and concluded they're idiots if they think that's some sort of fair matchup in the context they're using

So when the 300ZX TT won by .2 sec I was thinking "oh yeah suuure, that's oh so much faster guys. Spend $45k on the 350Z with a turbo and run that race"

It was the case of big guy picking on little guy - who barely won, and saying oh the big guy totally kicked the little guy's ***
