Default Orange Peel....NOT!!!!!!

Ok, I very closely examined my brand spanking new LeMans Sunset 350Z top to bottom and for the life of me, I cannot find any pronounced orange peel in the finish.

I saw a Brickyard at the dealer that was loaded with it but a black, silver and my LeMans were perfect. Maybe Nissan made a correction at the factory??

I LOVE THIS CAR!

Well, now that I know what orange peel is, I carefully examine the paint of every car/truck I come across and I have yet to see one without orange peel. In fact, my car (2000 Pontiac Grand Prix) has it all over the place.

Question so what is it?

Not to reveal my idiocy, but WHAT IS ORANGE PEEL? I searched as well as read over 100 posts to no avail. I will go search google but the simple definition should really be easier to find on this site
since the topic receives a good bit of banter. I am really not an idiot - if you explain this to me I will explain something cool about sub atomic particles to you.

Orange peel is a surface irregularity in the clear coat that resembles the surface of an orange or a golf ball. A good way to detect it is to look at the reflection of something in the car's paint. A great place to look for orange peel is in a dealer show room where there are lots of overhead lights. If the reflection you see in the paint is a sharp, clear image of the real thing, you have no orange peel. If, on the other hand, lines are not straight and the reflection looks a little out of focus in a 'dimpled' way, the paint job has orange peel.

My super black has faint orange peel, but nothing to freak out over.

my lemans has no orange peel either. its kind of ironic that the ORANGE z's dont seem to be getting orange peel as bad as the other colors.

VQracer posted some excellent pix of orange peel on the DB with close ups at an angle... do a search for those.

Look at the surface in a reflection.. at an angle.. the surface will appear dimpled instead of glass smooth.

This is so funny. The only message as common as "my car has orange peel" or "my car doesn't have orange peel" is "What is orange peel?" It never fails! This is the one of the few automotive terms that is entirely self-explanatory, and so many people have to ask what it means!

(Sorry, not to make fun of those asking the question, but it just makes me laugh at how many times I see the IDENTICAL messages being posted.)

You are correct, it is fairly self-explanatory but the first time I heard the term I had a good idea (self explained); although I wanted to make sure what EXACTLY it is, so I asked. The fastest way to learn is to ask.
