How about we RESPECT each other's choices and leave it at that!

Besides...you can be a "girly man" and drive a stick....Just ask old Red Ascot wearin', high pitched voice havin', "I like Trixie, but have never banged her" Speed Racer..LOL
Respect? Some of these guys could showcase a little class on these forums.

EdgeOfSanity I respect your opinion.

Agreed. We should all respect each others opinion and choices. So there is no
misunderstanding I am not bashing MT. For the record I love MT and AT.

And yes, I would take a well done 6spd over an AT anyday. Just trying to say
that we should respect the choices of one another and also realize that there
are better technologies out there than an MT. IMO the only stupid choice is a
choice made based on assumption.

Both AT and MT are legit choices in sports cars. Many here in the forum agree
and auto manufacturers also agree. I consider Porsche, Ferrari, Lotus and etc.
as purists. And the purists support AT or some derivative or hybrid of it...be it
SMG, Tiptronic, Steptronic or whatever.

It just seems like the bashing is endless both ways. MT owners argue MT>AT.
AT owners argue AT>MT. Then others (me ) argue SMG > MT & AT.

At what point do we all concede there are strengths and weaknesses in each
and no specific one is the better performer in every category?

Heh, no skill huh? Sorry, but i only use the tip shift on my auto. And it requires shifting at the right moment or you hit the rev limiter. Underpowered? Heh, i have very few mods and have run 13.39. What advantage exactly does a MT have over an AT? The advantage of having more moving parts? The advantage of having to add another step in shifting? The advantage of sitting in rush hour traffic and having to work the clutch every 3 sec? The advantage of missing a shift at a criticle moment? It's less money for a MT, so, i guess that's a good advantage. The advantage of comming to rest at a red light on one of these AL hills and having the Ahole behind you pull up 6" from your bumper?
I'm not against a MT, if you like it, that's great, drive it. But, saying that an AT is inferior to a MT is wrong.
I would say "see ya on the street" but, i don't look in the rear view mirror too often.

DayBlueZ you are right. It does take skill to drive AT and MT. Basic driving
concepts such as throttle steer, etc. cover AT and MT. Saying there is no
skill required to drive an AT is simply not true.

Maybe no skill required to use a clutch, but then there isn't one on AT.

I think the "no skill" part thats being discussed is in reference to 1/4 and highway runs....With the manual, the driver determines how good or bad his time is or if he beats a car or not....The AT is less involving and pretty repeatable..Point and shoot...As regards throttle steer etc that has nothing to do with the MT or AT but the with cars handling dynamics and the drivers skill at exploiting them...If you are making big power and are into the 1/4 then AT is the better choice...If you are into cuircuit racing, canyon carving, autocrossing etc then the Manual is the better choice..They can both do it all but they each excel at different venues and have there strengths and weaknesses like everything in life......Some of you guys need to get thicker skin..You are too soft and bruise too easily...In parting, MT owns you

so many vette owners drive autos because they are not performance enthusiasts. Most of them are older guys who probably wanted a vette when they were young but couldnt afford it. 2nd reason alot of them are autos is autos are almost always superior at the dragstrip. The people who buy the manuals understand the essence of a sports car. There is nothing more satisfying than running through the gears in a manual.

I agree with you 100% on this. My old Celica GT was a 5spd. and I loved running through the gears. However the auto Z does come with a tq. converter which multiplies torque throughout the rev range. Thats why the performance difference of both cars are identical. Also the SMG2 on the M3 is not a traditional automatic. Its an automated manual. Same thing with ferrari's F1 shifter which shifts in only 25milliseconds between gears . Thats crazy fast. Why do you guys think they charge more for the F1 tranny over the manual. But back to the original poster... who cares what others say about your car. You have a car which they can only dream about and put Z posters up in their room. Enjoy your Z and next time they badger you... show them how "slow" your auto really is. BTW have you guys seen how fast the Z shifts with a VB upgrade? There is no delay between shifts and its almost or just as fast as a SMG.

MT=poser

wrong. Sports car enthusiasts should drive what they want wether its an auto Z or a SMG M3 or a 6spd. 911 or a F1 F430.

the sooner that you learn in life that people will always be trying to knock you down a peg... the sooner you won't let that stuff get to you.

If it wasn't the automatic transmission it would be something else... i.e.

if the haters arn't saying

"I would never have gotten the auto"

they will be saying

"why would you buy the Z if the G is so much nicer"

and if you had a 6mt G it would just be something else.

i have better things to do than spend hours agruing on internet boards. I dont really need to back up what i said because i would said has already been covered by other people. You shouldnt have bought a sports car if you wanted the practicality of it. Sports cars are meant to be impractical and they're meant to be driven with a manual.

im sorry but i cant respect the choice someone makes of buying an auto in a sports car. It just doesnt make sense to me. Smg is not a derivative of an automatic, its a manual gearbox with a clutch controlled by a computer.

in a drag racing situation the AT is usually better, not always. The main advantage is having a torque converter. MT transmissions have less moving parts and are generally stronger than any AT transmission. Its that extra step that makes it so much more fun.

The advantage of sitting in rush hour traffic and having to work the clutch every 3 sec?
if you wanted practicality you should not have bought a sports car

Not sure who is more insecure here... the MT owners who feel like they need to bash the AT owners or the AT owners that are letting it get them down.

If you own a MT and you're proud of it; good for you. It’s much better to be modest than to brag about your achievements.

If you own the AT and are letting the MT owners push you into a flame war, don’t take it so seriously.

I like fast cars but I don’t like driving a stick, if some people think I am ghey or a puzzy b/c of that, well that’s their problem not mine. I know I will never get ‘respect’ from people like that so why should I even care? I would rather the MT owners think I was a little b!tch, poser car enthusiast, ect than buy a car with a standard that I didn’t want just to impress people I don’t care about.

I always had this one question:

if Ferrari sequential gearbox, M3's SMGII, or even M5's SMGIII shift in couple milliseconds, how do they operate the clutch? Does the computer just pop out the clutch and let the car jerk while accelerating?

I mean I know there are settings from mild to extreme for those SMGs, for extreme setting, does the computer do that?
