Looks like to me for a car that would do good in the snow would be the 4 wheel drive Audi TT

That's a pretty wide price range, the Z is the cheapest!

Z starts at $46K
STI starts at $49k
TT starts at $56k
SLK starts at $60k
Boxster starts at $64k
M3 starts at $75k

Not that I am a fan, but after watching that video posted ealier, there is the Crossfire, starting at $40k. There is also the RX-8 starting at $37k

Well with price as no object and provided they were all brand new, i'd take the M3. No need to mod it

If money is no object there is only one choice:M3. If driving in snow is a priority I would assume the STI would be the best. Hard to mention STI and M3 in same comparison.

What exactly are you looking for??? Your comparing 2 seaters to 4 seater here man... You have kids? Are you planning on going skiing or biking for example?
All of the cars you listed will be fine in snow....as long as you have a good set of tires and some driving skills......

Since it does snow there and you are looking for decent performance and are worrying about modding... then get an STi. Very durable(AWD), looks decent, can be a daily driver all year long and easy and cheap to mod.

Have you driven any of the cars on your list? I've driven all except M3 and the Merc. Mercs are really unreliable laterly, so I'd cross it off; dunno about M3; I read that their reliability isn't great either, but the huge plus is they hold their value like mad, and everyone raves about their combination of insane handling with comfortable cruising.

I drove all the other cars on the list, and my choice if price was not an issue is a new Boxster. BY FAR the best car in terms of tickling the senses in a pleasant way. The engine note is amazing, the steering, brakes, and throttle are great and communicative.

I didn't like the S2000 -- too thrashy, noisy, and stiff, and there is definitely too little torque.

I didn't like the STi -- the econo car base shows through its performance. And honestly, I didn't enjoy the performance all that much. The turbo has a ton of lag, and there is only a short sweet spot on the tach when it pulls hard. The car is very noisy inside; the panels rattle; ride is unnesessarily stiff, and for the life of me, I could not drive the car smoothly.

Which brings us to the Z. It's like a Boxster that gained a little bit of weight. For the money, you really can't beat it. The resale value is good; it's comfortable; it's fast; it has excellent controlls and feedback; it's quite moddable ($7k can get you 400+ RWHP), and it's Japanese, which means relatively reliable and relatively inexpensive (and quick) to fix.

One car I would suggest considering in this price range is the E90 325i ZSP or 330i ZSP. Just drove one this weekend (325), and man, what a well balanced car. Not crazy powerful, but still 0-60 in 6.1-6.7 depending on model -- it's not a slouch by any means.

Of course these are just my opinions based on my preferences. Go try them all and report on your choice! Good luck!

-pavel.
