If you dont change your brakes in time, then it will wear into your rotors and then it will cost you bank!!!!!

You should hear a squeeling, or if you take of your wheels you should be able to look at the pad and see how much is left on it. If you go too far past the squeeling you will end up eating your rotors, which yeah will cost you bank. some places will do a free brake inspection with an oil change, but i think places will tell you that you need brakes just to eat your money. check the thread on changing brake pads, once you do it once it will be easy.

+1. You can have the brakes checked periodically, but yes, when they start making noise. It’s likely caused by a little clip on your brake pads. The clip is a built-in wear indicator that makes a high-pitched warning sound when the brake pads are worn and new pads are needed.

Will this “mess up” the rotors? No not exactly. The rotors are designed to worn by the brake pads. On the other hand, they are not meant to be abused by metal-to-metal contact (no pad remaining).

Nope it's the other way around. Generally when the pads need replaced they will make a persistent squealing noise when you're not braking, and when you start to brake the noise goes away. If they squeal when you brake it's most likely from brake dust that has built up on the pads. It can be cleaned out and the noise will go away. I've already had to do this at 20k miles. The pad's were fine just caked with dust. If your brakes are making any noise it would be a good idea to have them checked out by a qualified professional regardless. Better safe than sorry.
