I'm def not an expert on this, and I'm assuming that those who have done the gear change would know for sure (and not just assume that the computer will correct it). but in mustangs you do have to buy and install a different plastic gear for the speedo to read correctly after you change the rear gearing. someone who can explain if/how the Z corrects this should chime in.

i speedo measures a vehicle's wheel speed. changing your rear end ratio doesn't affect the speed at which your wheels are turning. only changes the engine rpm for a given veh speed. to find out the change in engine speed just multiply by the ratio of the axle ratios. 3.5/3.3

And that is always the drive wheels correct? I mean that a front wheel drive vehicle measures speed by the front wheels?

Vehicle speed comes from abs/traction control system wheel rotation sensors.

From the rear only...

You could physically be going 15 miles an hour and have the speedo say you are going 63

Our 350Z's measure their speed with the ABS/TCS sensors which are located on the stub axels of the rear axel. Since the measurement is taken AFTER the rear axle, unlike Rustangs, the speedo is unaffected. Different tire diameters WILL change the speedo reading.
