Default HORRIBLE thing about the Z... :( :( :(

Soon as you get out of the car, you walk into the most gross stink.. as if it was an rotting egg being spit by the hundreds from the exaust! Anyone know why the exaust smells so horrible? Any fixes?

Default Cosmoline burn-off?

The only thing I noticed was a preservative called cosmoline (sp?) which is factory applied before shipping. While it prevents corrosion, it does have a peculiar odor when burning off the exhaust.

Not sure if the dealer can remove all of it during the PDI. I found the odor going away after a few weeks...

How many miles do you have on the car?? and what brand of gasoline do you use?? I have a friend who has a ford explorer with the same problem. When he switched brands (not grades) after 2 tanks the smell went away..

What you're smelling is a new catalytic converter at work. It'll go away in due time.

It will not go away. I have 3500km on my car now and it is still there. Mostly when idleing after driving a bit. I have a feeling it is the brand I use (Petro Canada 91 octane...the highest they have). Problem is that I have a company gas card and for the cost of gas these days, I'll suffer with the smell.

your smellin somethin else then, low octane gas would not cause the exhaust to smell. nor is 91 all that low. go to a dealer, test drive a car, beat the **** out of it, smell it when your done. see if thats the smell your getting.

I agree its not an octane issue. But there may be other stuff in the gas making it smell like that. My father has had a 1999 QX4 and now has a 2001 QX4 and they both emit this smell. I think the Nissan Cats do not like Petro Canada Gas. I may be wrong though.

It's the converter. I smell it still to this day (16k miles) on my Camaro after getting on it then parking in the garage.

Had my car 1 month, 23 days with 600 miles on it (rarely drive it). So far the smell is still there. I don't get it all the time, I'd say maybe 4 out of 10 times, but when I do, it's HORRIBLE...

Thumbs down Rotten egg smell

My wife has a 03 Z we love it but the exhaust smell is horrible. The smell is not horrible all the time.It occures on warm days and cold? The car has 3000 miles and we use only 93 octane. The smell is so bad at stoplights it choke's you in the car. Has any one else had this problem? What is your dealer telling you? Ours said it was NORMAL. The is BS!!!!. Any suggestions?

Default The smell is NOT normal.

It's from too much unburnt gasoline entering the cat and overworking it. If it continues too long, your cat will fail. A diagnostic scanner should be able to verify the mixture. Get it checked!

Thanks for your responce. I am going to try and get the dealer to replace the Cat's. If the wont we might persue the lemon law after 5 times in the shop. Between the crappy stereo and egg smell I think we will win.
My wife loves her car but I am very dissapointed with Nissans Quality for $35,000. We waited 10 months for this car.
It is a blast to drive and get's looks but you need more than that when you spend that kind of money.

Default no smell

I don't know about this 'all nissans smell'. I have a 95 Altima, I've never noticed an odor. Another friend of mine has a brand new Altima, she's never noticed a smell. Several friends of mine have new and old Maximas, no odor there either. My buddy in TX has a new Z, don't know about how many miles, but I know it's past break in, and he says there's not peculiar odor. The dealers are just being dealers.

My neighbor had a Pathfinder that did the exact same thing. He took it to the dealer the required 3x's then pursued the PA Lemon Law. He won and got all his $$$ back plus court costs.

My advice would be to try and get it fixed. If not, then go for the lemon law. Let's face it, you didn't spend $35,000 to smell rotten eggs everyday.

Sulphur content in gazoline varies widely between oil companies. In Toronto Sunoco is lowest and Exxon is the highest.

I never buy Exxon gaz for my 350Z.

We have tried many different brands of gas and still it smells. I am going to the dealer next week. Hope they have some answers. We love the car but not the smell.
