Did your tranny problem start like this?
I've had my car for 4 months now, about 5k on odometer. Recently, when i do a 6-5 downshift at low rpms i hear grinding kinda like wood splintering noise. I dont hear it on any other gears. I make sure that i push clutch all the way down when i shift but i still get it. its not reproducible but it happens regularly. Is this how your tranny problem started? My tranny is awsome and its not that notchy at all, infact 2-3 3-4 4-5 5-6 shifts are butter smooth and i havnt mis shifted since 2 weeks after i bought my car. I dont drive car hard on 5th gear, only 2nd and 3rd. In fact i havnt even gone past 110 on my car, way to scurred -.-.

You've just begun the great decline. You might as well drive that tranny into the ground; bringing it to nissan now will just exxacerbate the problem. I tried; after three weeks they decided to just replace the transmission anyways, after trying numerous parts.

Theres not a commone theme on how these problems starts. The only thing semi common is that the grinding gets more routine with more miles. It does sound like you have a tranny problem and I would recommend you taking it to the dealer.

Mine did this until I adjusted the 5-6 or 6-5 guide. Once it was adjusted right it shifted without any knotchiness. I found this out when I tried a short shifter that vibrated without the stock ****. Still working on that so I reinstalled the stock shifter set up the shift guide properly and no more 5-6 or 6-5 alignment problems or grinds.
Worth the time to see if there is too much gap there. That is what causes the problem from my experience.

huh... might explain why a lot of people are grinding fifth and sixth instead of a more abused gear. Never even thought of that!

I found this quite by mistake. Ever since I adjusted it I haven't missed a shift to 5th or 6th cause you just ride the rail and it lines up perfectly. Just don't push down on the shifter going into 6th or you'll find youself in Reverse by mistake. Almost did that once. I felt the shifter drop down so I aborted the shift. Now I pull back on the shifter going into 6th with my index finger wrapped around the shifter vs coming over the top of the ball with my whole palm. If that makes sense to ya.

yeah, I've never had a problem with going for reverse when I meant to go for 6th. But my first tranny, I could ride that right side back and forth into 5th and 6th. Now, it's a little bit offset, so that if I go all the way to the side, it won't go into gear. When I first got the car back out on the road, and couldn't get it into 5th, I thought "oh no, here we go again!!!" Luckily I got it figured out :P
