Dont worry man your doing the right thing. Break it in easy for first 1500 miles. Then you can redline it all you want. Keep it under 4k for now. Although I wouldn't go up to 4k either until then.

For the best gas milage on a Z set your shift indicator at around redline and at every red light drop the clutch and smoke tires. This will cause you to not only waste a ton of gas but also incur future tire costs.

This is what I do and I think you should to ....why? because to worry about gas milage on a sports car is like a hummer worrying about a speed bump at a grocery store -

Babying an engine for its first 1500 miles and then redlining it is not very good.

The 4k limit is only for lengthy periods. Short incursions above it is ok and actually beneficial to the engine and drive train break in.

i have my shift warning light at the stock setting. I floor it often and i still get 18 miles per gallon. but if i try to get good gas millage i shift at 4000 and get 24 miles per gallon.

I regularly shift at 3,000rpm... I feel it is the best balance between fuel economy, acceleration and practicality when driving around town. For the more spirited accels, I rev it to like 4,500 or 5,000 =)

Shifting at 2,500 is like when you're driving in a parking lot... Just wind it up a bit more, the car gets decent gas mileage if you don't constantly have a lead foot.

I currently average about 23.2 MPG. I generally shift at 3000, although I occasionally will go beyond that when I am entering the freeway or trying to pass people up. So my shift light is at 3000RPM because that way I can actually SEE the damn light when I am daily driving. Also, in 6th gear at 80mph, you should be around 3000RPM. It forces me to stay 80mph or under so I have less chances of getting a speeding ticket. Of course, that's not to say that I don't EVER take it above 80, but if I do, it won't be for that long since I get annoyed of the blinking light.
That's what I do LOL!

+1, but I get 24.X around town...

25-26 Highway... (and this is with a few mods)

I shift whenever I please. Usually 3000-4000, but several romps to 6000-6500 as well during a day.

Really? Because I did at times, and thought to myself, "Oh man, I hope I didn't screw up anything". I always varied my rpms and kept it between 2k and 3k most of the time. After 1500, I started going towards 5k, and gradually day by day worked towards the redline. I hope I cleared up what I was trying to say. Just take it easy and don't go overboard with the engine. And definitely don't accelerate quickly. I'm just following the manual. Nissan made it that way for a reason.

if you shift below 3k, then i don't think you bought the right car. THIS IS A SPORT CAR.

Just for the break in period. Don't get me wrong. Reread my posts again. I still redline a lot now. No doubt about that. I just like to follow Nissan's manual for best maintenance of the car.

My shift points depend on my mood. I couldn't care less about gas mileage.

I set my rev meter at 5900 rpms bc I want maximum ponies and I want a warning when I'm getting close to the knock zone. Usually, I give it some juice when there is a nice clearing 4000-5000 rpms. I usually rip the rpms in the 6000 range once a day to get my fix.

It all depends on the gas..
Exonmobil averages me 15mpg
Sunoco 94 averages me 23-24
BP Amaco averages me 22-23
Denco/Wawa/Raceway averages me 15
All others between 13 (EEK) to 18

I usually put amaco since its best bang for buck.

I shift at 3k usually but occasionally romp it. Also, i dont waste time shifting and i usually stay in high gear unless im passing. Cruise control is your friend.

To get good gas mileage, I shift at exactly 2000rpm. Doing that, I've seen 24mpg in the city. It's about the most boring way to drive the Z, but it works!

Yes, it's a sports car, but some of us also use this car as (fun) transportation back and forth from work and going out to get groceries and stuff and would like halfway decent gas mileage at those times

That said, I set my shift light at 4800 (which in the manual says is optimal for accel) although I rarely shift then in regular driving. I pretty much let the feel and sound of the engine tell me when i should shift, which is somewhere around 3000-3500 RPM and I get about 16-19 city and avg about 20MPH (it's L.A. what'ya'gonna do?). My numbers always go way up if I can do a lot of hwy driving. If i remember correctly, set @ 4800 your doing a little over 100 before the light starts flashing @ 4300 in sixth.
