I'm not positive, but I'm assuming it's a starter disable or ignition disable tied to the alarm system. Anyone know for sure?

If you have security issues in your neighborhood definitely invest in a $300-$500 aftermarket alarm with dual or tri shutoff and secondary battery backup.

I have the Nissan Vehicle Immobilizer System (NVIS) on my Sentra, and though I'm sure it's much more advanced on the 350Z, the basic characteristics are:

-engine disable when the alarm is activated
-a key w/ a chip that the car's computer recognizes
-if another key or some other device is used to attempt to start the car, well, the engine won't start.

That's all I know about it.

Don't quote me on this but I believe the Z comes with one of those alarms that senses when one set of wheels come off the ground as in someone snagging it with a tow truck. Yes, it does come with a starter kill when the alarm goes off. I do want to see the microchip in the key option on this car though.

I read on the usenet about this guy rigging up his own homemade "theft-deterrent" device in his truck. He claims that if someone gets in the car (starts the engine?) and doesn't disable the device in 3 seconds, the doors automatically lock and two CO2 fire extinguishers discharge in the vehicle - dropping the temperature about 120 degrees.

If someone dies in your car and nobody is there to see it, will he make a sound?

If this is true, this guy is a moron. If the thief is injured or dies, he (the owner of the car) will be criminally charged.

I just did a usenet search to try to find the original article - couldn't find it, but I did see others talk about using fire extinguishers for the same purpose.

Seems kind of outlandish, and I agree, killing someone in your car is more vigilantism (is that a word?) than theft-deterrent. It's not worth the charges you'll probably face.

Check out the link for an interesting security

http://www.finalstop.com/pepper/autotaser/autotaser.htm

It looks like a club, but lights up like a taser when it experiences a shock. I have been tempted to get one for my jeep when the top is down and the doors off, but I wouldn't want to fry an innocent cat.

that flamer thingy on the bmw is in mexico, where there are too much crime on car hijacking and kidnapping.

You guys crack me up....

A security system that will either freeze-dry or fry the intruder !!

That's great .. not so sure I would want to drive it afterwards.

On the serious side... why is the Viper system so popular ?

That taser thing would be easy to defeat. You would do with that, exactly what they do with the club....just cut the steering wheel on both sides of the thing and it would fall right off.

The vehicle immobilizer with an electronic key is a great anti-theft device, but consider this: I needed to get a new key for my Honda minivan (conventional, non-electronic key) and got it done at the hardware store for about a dollar. My friend asked about getting a new key made for his Boxster, which uses an electronic system, and was quoted about 300 bucks by the Porsche dealer! So anti-theft is nice, but don't lose the key!
