Question New 06 Navi better than old Navi ?

Thinking of trading up to Touring w/Navi from my 05 Enthusiast...

Have heard the new Navi is greatly improved...has anyone compared
the new vs old Navi?

Any reports will be very much appreciated, thanks!

Upgrading just for the navigation system? That seems crazy, to me anyway....

Could you get a hold of a navigation system in a new car and install it? Maybe from a salvage yard. I am sure people are wrecking there 06 z's by now.

I know the interface is different, heres 2 pics, one of an 06 and one of an 05!

Nissan is still cheap in the fact that it is not touch activated or voice activated. In my opinion the Nissan NAV sucks, because you basically have to be parked to do practically anything. I like the OEM look but the price is too steep for what it does. Heck why can't Nissan be like Honda, Acura or Lexus and have touch screen and voice functions?

Both were taken by different people and different camera's, hence the quality of the 1st pic is better than the 2nd!

Heres the 06

And the 05

Steering wheel controls over audio in the '06, huh?

That's nice...

Thanks for all the replies, all input is good...

I basically keep my cars "stock", the only mod I've made to my 05 Enthusiast is
swapping the drivers sideview mirror for one from Australia (convex curved).

Would upgrade to the 06 Touring for all the new stuff (wheels, leds, bi-hids) plus leather.

Never have had Navi, understand it is not considered very good in early
model years, so I just want to know if it is really improved for 06 ?

Thanks!

The 06 NAV is great. I got my proximity setting set to "meow" when the car get within 1000 ft of my house. Icon and sound effect selection is really good. Vird-view is really fun too.

Here is a pic of the 06 Nav. I also think it's worth the money, but to each his own.

The '06 navigation is greatly improved, lots more details, graphics have changed, there is also a split screen functionailty. This is just not a software upgrade. You need new hardware installed for some of the new function to work. Hence why you can't purchase a '06 nav dvd and put it into a 03-05 model and make it work.

And I personally like the bling factor. I have two screens now, the GPS navi screen at the top, and a double din dvd/cd/mp3/memory stick player at the bottom.

And yes, I do use both. I was looking for a new home last year, so I used the navi system a lot. I use the navi to find car shops. I use the navi to find shortcuts to get out of traffic jams. It's awsome for road trips and going on new mountain twisties and you don't want to get disoriented in your directions.

As for the DVD player, I burn music videos on the DVD and so I can listen to music and let my passenger (or myself when the car is parked) watch the video.

Also, here is a link to the new screens: https://my350z.com/forum/showpost.ph...8&postcount=17

Not having had Nav before, I did not realize one cannot "interface"
with the Nav while driving? Have to be parked?

Thanks again!

You can use most of the nav interface while driving. The only thing I have noticed that they won't let you do is to not let you spell out the name of the road/city/etc. you are trying to get to until the car is stopped. I believe this is a good feature(although annoying) because I can see how it can cause accidents.

Some features of the 03-05 navi if you don't know yet:

-It gives you voice directions.
-If you enter in the exact address, it will direct you to the exact house even tell you which side of the road the house will be on.
-It keeps track of you oil milage so it can warn you when you need an oil change.
-It has a day and night colour scheme that you can adjust to see better depending on what time of day you are at.
-Bird view or horizon view.
-You can also mark which roads to avoid if there is construction work, etc.
-You can request the fastest or most direct routes.
-It can show on the maps, resturants, ATM machine, gas stations, major landmarks, hotels.
-It will auto finish spellings for you.
-Zoom in to 50 feet and zoom out(I don't know how far you can zoom out)
-You can bookmark locations and save it to an address book.

I'm sure there are more features, but those are the ones I use the most and remember. I'm sure the 2006 navi has many more options.

Anyone have a ballpark on the cost of going to a dealer and having the 06 OEM nav installed in an 04? I know it is probably more expensive than a car-puter, but I don't know if I am willing to deal with all of that.

Let's put it this way, I was quoted $2,000cdn($1,705usd) when I asked how much it would be to install the '05 headunit because I wanted the MP3 capabilty.

He said the quote was just for the head unit. For that price, you could get such a better aftermarket headunit installed with a new sound system to boot! I didn't even bother asking him how much to upgrade the new '06 nav unit.

Consider aftermarket units. I have a Lowrance iway500 with mp3 capability to almost 10 gig and it has been an great unit. It has a 20 gig hard drive built in so no external hardware is needed. Free software upgrades on the website, touchsreeen interface, multiple view angles, lots of set up and mounting accessories, and, best of all, portability between vehicles.

I use the windshield mount for my Z and a weighted dash mount for my truck. Not the prettiest I guess but 20 seconds puts it in the trunk if I wish.

Less than $700...

FYI: The maps in the 7.1 Nav in the 06's are the same as the 6.4. The only difference is hardware and the format of the actually Navigation.
