I agree with you, Nexx and angelzhope720; being part of an online community is a whole different feeling. We all look for (what us marketers call) confirmation bias; the inert desire to seek through questioning and observation, a validation of what we buy and consume and in the manner we do so (that is just my definition though, so don't quote me!). That's where an online forum comes in. We watch what others are doing and in order to be a part of the community, we imitate or even surpass them, a classic example of "keeping up with the joneses", albeit for the cyber age.
And that has ALWAYS been the case. The neighborhood has changed from bricks to bytes, but inside, we still want others' approval of what we buy; whether they sit in our neighboring cube at work, or New Zealand.
To answer your question (finally!) David, if we are looking at modding strictly by definition, then perhaps as much as 40% of Zs out there are modified in some minute way. However, if we are talking wheels, kits, FI, etc, then perhaps less than 10%.

I would guess that nearly half the Zs I see around VaBch are modded to some degree in either appearance or performance. I saw a nice Silverstone one today that I hadn't seen before that had some nice wheels and Nismo exhaust with a tag of "Trakkar".
It really seems like the majority of modders are in Cali. Maybe it's easier to get things done there.

I think the figure is about 10% as it is with most "enthusiast" vehicles. Almost every enthusiast type of vehicle has a website just like this one. The people who live on these websites are the true car addicts of the world, and as such tend to be the ones who are really into modding. Still it represents a small percentage overall. Amazing when you think about how much is out there in the mod market for the Z. Yesterday I totalled up the bill for all my mods.....$27,000 including labor for install, and that's without a forced induction system!!!!

You have to consider the age group that buys the Z ....that has a lot to do with it. For instance who buys an EVO or STI, OR even SRT-4 and doesnt do some kind of mod to it. Because we buy these cars well our Z is different they handle well , look sexy as sh*t plus are quick but we want to go faster. When I bought my 99 SS Camaro the 1st thing I thought about was where Do I start.... and it was already fast but it is like a drug. Honestly how many people can say that the Z is fast enough for them? It will never be fast enough for me but I will keep moding until I get tired then sell and buy somthing else to start modding..Next few years there will be some super fast cheaper cars to buy...l

Good point Frosty, I won't mod while I have warranty coverage, the next owner has no warranty and can mod away....
So maybe the original question can be divided:
What percent of warranteed cars get mods vs percent "as-is" cars modded?
Warranteed cars 10%..
Non-warranty cars 50%...

2) No. This site is not just "for tuners, modders and custom hounds". Stock drivers can get a lot of info from here, too.
3) Yes. This forum does have a higher percentage of modders and hence is not representative of society as a whole.
That being said, I'm seeing so many of the same mods over and over again, in some sense, even modified Z's are losing their individuality.

I think most are stock, but I say good. It makes mine more unique and the more cars Nissan sells, the more they are willing to dump into R & D to make our cars faster,

LOL, mine is stock, and I was able to smoke lots of stock and tuned japanese imports. I'm happy with it, and don't need anymore power. It also looks awesome. The only thing I would change if I had lots of money is turbo, springs(Lowering) and wheels. Otherwise-I'm happy
