I will roll at exactly 80 on my way home from work tonight and see if my '03 does that, can't recall it but usually I'm at WOT on the way home and half asleep on the way in...

It like some harmonic balance of the engine and/or tranny, at that speed, rpm and load of 80mph wind against it, everything just hums in delight.

howling noise=happy car

Your window regulator motor is failing, when you close the door the window isn't going up the extra 1/8 inch and making the appropriate seal. Check both the driver and passenger window.

I'm going to go through and check my exhaust. I went WOT on a cold motor this afternoon and it sounded like a pretty severe leak... Got quieter when it had warmed up though.

+2. Exactly 80. At like 78 or 82, nothing.

And its not the window -- mine goes up that extra little bit and the Z still makes the sound.

very similar thing happens to me..but i noted what RPM range it happens in, not the mph.
https://my350z.com/forum/maintenance-and-repair/245058-whirring-noise-from-engine.html
it happens pretty much every single time now, and only between those rpms.

This is normal, it's the tranny and you'll notice that it mostly happens in 6th gear.
Nothing to worry.

Ha. The sun finally came out after three consecutive snows storms so I pulled the Z from its winter storage and put the top down and ran up my favorite hill climb. (The hill is just above the Ariel Atom factory.) All I could hear was the supercharger whine at redline! Heck, half the screws could be rattling I would not hear a thing but the WHINE all the way up and down the hill. Too much fun.

I dont know about you guys and believing that it's "Normal," but I honestly didn't buy this car to hear any animals/ghost noises. I have an 05' and it seems apparrent @ random RPM's when it's cold out. However, the problem isn't big enough to cause enough trouble for Nissan to have a recall on any certain part.... also considering the fact that no one seems to know where this is coming from either!

I spoke to a Nissan mechanic about it and he believes it's transmission related. Something is "turning" to create this noise even though it sounds like wind. Others have said "brakes/rotors" however most of us are not constantly engaging our brakes. This problem I have been having recently occured, it was not apparent when the car was new, only recently @ 23k miles.

my car does not "howl" at 80mph, nor does it "howl" anywhere from 60-95mph. this does not sound normal and if my car did it I would kick the dealer in the nuts!

A guy on 350zmotoring had the same problem. He took it to the service guys at the Dealership and they spent 2 whole days trying to locate the howl - ended up giving him a brand new tranny in hopes that it will fix the issue. I'll keep you guys updated on how it's going over there.

I get the same thing on my 06 at 80-83 mph in 6th gear only. The second I give it more gas it goes away. Maybe its something with the fuel system?

It it was fuel, it would occur in any gear though. Its also odd that once you let off the gas, it goes away. I dont see how the differential would act different for each gear either. The only thing I can think of is the tranny.
