Default Fuel Tank Issues

I have an '04 Enthusiast. The tank is supposed to be 20 gallons, but the most I can get on a fill up is around 17 gallons. Also lately I am not even able to get that much. Has anyone else had problems like this in their Z? I asked my local Nissan dealership and they had not heard of anything like this. Is there a TSB for this? Thanks in advance for the help.

2 explanations......

the Z is smart and tells you the tank is empty when there is really 3 gallons left.....or......

the fuel nozzle cuts off early (which is a common problem for some Z's) where it wont let you put in a 100% full tank. try rotating the nozzle upside-down and see if you can get some more fuel in

Yeah i tried to do that, and it helps sometimes. I ran it all the way past empty yesterday, and tried to fill up the tank yesterday. The pump kept shutting off around 8 gallons, no matter what way I turned the nozzle.

I've ran it for a full day without even having mileage showing (flashing) and still filled up at like 18 gallons.

i panic also =P I dont understand why they made it a 3 gallon reserve tank... i mean most of us know when the light is on we have low fuel

and when the meter says 20 miles remaining it means GO TO THE NEAREST GAS STATION

Why 3 gallons reserve? We average lets say 25 miles per gallon...

Is the nearest gas station really 75 miles away? lol

this is not the recent recall notice that involves the fuel hoses leaking. that is a different issue. this TSB is for not being able to completely fill up the gas tank.

I think we have a pretty big reserve from when it says empty till it really is.

I drove about 30 miles AFTER the DTE was flashing 0. Keep in mind this # is dependent on how you are driving the car. I noticed mine go up and down depending on how heavy footed I was being at the time...

Now that I am running larger injectors and TT, I tend to be VERY cautious and as soon as I see the take getting below ¼, I fill up to 7/8ths tank.

Sometimes my the automatic cut off kicks in around eight gallons into my fill up as well. I have to try a few times to get it to keep going. It really is annoying and I will have my dealership take a look when I take it in for her first oil change.

a few years ago there was a member who drove til he ran out of gas. IIRC he drove for almost an entire day with the DTE = 0. He then put in approx 1 gal of gas and drove a mile or so to the nearest gas station. he figured he used maybe 1/4 gallon getting to the station. he put in something like 18.5 gal.....so 18.5 + 0.75 = 19.75.....something like that

The Z says your empty at 17 gallons. I've gone to the point were the DTE meter is dashes for quite some time and only filled up with 18 gallons.
