Default what would you use to polish a timing cover

anybody have any ideas as to cleaning a timing cover.it is discolored and has some small pitts in it due to the use of tons of salt in the winter in maryland.i was wondering would a metal polish and a dremel do,or does someone with exp in polishing aluminum have any insights.
