Im an active airline pilot now as some of you know, and used to work out of a smaller airport back in late 2004 where they offered me some 100LL to try in the Z.... i had test pipes on my car and thought what the hell lets give it a shot its underwarrany right.... car ran fine and made no hints that it wasnt using pump gas. I read up on it alittle further and didnt find anything worth worrying about... just my 2 cents,..... dont use jp8 or jet A some airports have 100 which i believe is green... should work too.

100LL has 2 grams per gallon of lead and is blue in color. It will kill your cats and won't do your 02 sensors any good. 2 gallons shouldn't wreck the enitre emission system but a couple of tanks full will. Why take a chance? Not much to gain.

well like i said, if you have test pipes than your not really worried about emitions anyways? but what you say is true in regards to cats

With all due respects, I dont know a single ATPL or CPL holder whom would do that given our knowledge about combustion and A/F ratios in general... Nor do I know of a single ultra light aka:Rec licence holder whom would NOT know the effects of the above.....
What I can say is that putting something like J-A or 100LL in your car on purpose is.. well if you like her........

Remember, its the emmitions systems that will show the first effects of inproper fuel.
I can see a VQ running 100ll for a short period of time without anyproblems.... speaking of which... were you driving it? or lettting it idle during this "test"?

What you tried is something my rec licence holder friends would try on their "beater cars" while drinking scotch on a rainy day (Since you worked at a "small airport" do know what I mean by "Hanger Talk" right? LOL ) I seriously doubt any of them would do that on their prized 350Z RIGHT??????????

IF you can get your car to start with the stuff in the tank, you'll run into big problems, not least of which is overheating due to the high flashpoint of aviation fuels.

Well said. Are you an A and P or an Navy air rat?

To further your explanation....

The higher flash point of 100LL for example will be hard to notice on an "dirty car" aka:No O2 Sensors from cold start up for a few minutes... However, your EGT temps would shoot out of the gauge after more than a few mins at idle after "giving her" significantly.

well my point is it didnt do anything to the car what so ever... it was free and was comming from an A and P that wasnt trying to make hanger talk or such conversation. We figured with no cats and no 02 sensors in the car it would be fine.... i ran a whole tank of this stuff... it was free at the time... i wouldnt do it now, but when it was under warranty it was worth the experiment.

100LL is very similar to the old leaded premium that we used in our cars all the time. The lead will mess with the emissions, etc. but otherwise it should be fine.

It's not rocket fuel, its gasoline, just a different blend.

HEY! Thats a cheap shot buddy! Unlike most members here, I do own a car with a VQ in it.... and when it does come to fuel, especially Avgas, Vs. Mogas I know what I`m talking about! Have you ever spend 40K on any engines in birds you`ve flown?

I`m up to my second O-470K, and my 3d 9 cly PW450-hp Pratt & Whitney R-985-AN Wasp Junior radial Overhaul

I'm not fighting
The O-470 K is on my C-180, the P&W is for my DHC-2 aka:"The Beaver"..... Those two suckers cost me more in overhauls then buying a new M3 would every year

I wouldnt trust myself on something like our VQ's...... way, way to complicated...... It dosent less complicated then a Continental ,carburated horozontaly opposed engine, or even simpler the big ole' radial ......

I don't know if it is available everywhere, but for some unknown reason here in central Florida a lot of Sunoco stations carry the 100 octane unleaded racing fuel. It is ridiculously priced $6+ per gallon but if you want to put high octane fuel in the Z try it instead of 100LL.

I used to fly small planes and the FBO (Fixed Based Operator) at the local airport ran the Av gas in their pickup (early 60's model before cats, maybe put 2000 miles a year on it never left the airport) and the only complaint he ever made was he had to replace the exhaust system more often and the lead would cause the valves not to fully seat after while. They did their own maintenance on it so was no big deal to them.

I think even the low lead will screw up the cats and O2 sensors pretty quickly so don't think its worth the chance.
