Yes, yesterday, moments after hearing that my older brother probably has breast cancer, I walked around to the passanger side of my three month old Z (orange) to see someone had keyed the rear fender, the door, the front fender and, just for effect, the hood. What a nasty thing to do. I have a thousand dollar deductable... Ouch. Just a note on the Nissan paint. I took my own key and wanted to see how hard it was to scratch the car. I used my own key and dragged it lightly next to one of the scratches. I was horrified at how little pressure was needed to scratch the car. This paint is kind of cheap.
how could your brother (a guy) have breast cancer?
The paint that comes on the Z and Nissans for the most part are very delicate and consists of very few layers. The paint as far as I know is sprayed on in an assembly line spray hanger, and left to dry at room temperature.
The alternative is to have the whole chassis DIPPED, and sprayed with clear coat, then Heat CURED to make sure the paint is definitely stuck ON the car and is molded to the shape of the car so that it becomes part ofthe chassis.
I was told the reason for the cheap paint is that car manufacturers wer required to change the formula of paint to comply with environmental regulations. As I recall they switched from oil based to water based paints. That is why we have the now all to common "orangepeel" effect amongst othre complaints ( paint too thin...chips easily etc).
