Question What exactly causes rasp?

Okay I tried to search other forums for a direct answer but I didnt find anything. I bought some test pipes awhile back that were non-resonated. When you look through the pipe there isnt anything that looks like it would create such a sound. So what does create the sound? Can i have an exhaust shop install resonators? Im about to take them off and gut my old factory cats..... but then again why dont the gutted factory cats create rasp? thanks guys, JOSH

Air (exhaust) forced through pipe makes noise. Determining factors include: material, thickness, inner diameter, length, bends, distance from source. A resonator is one technique to reduce noise. Another method is the muffler.

Same effect occurs in your innards when you consume large quantities of cheap, exotic food. Only we don't call it rasp.

Also keep in mind that temperature will affect the resonance. It may be fine when the car is cold but after a while it could get worse as things heat up.

Rasp is caused by these little green men who climb into your exhaust and start singing high notes when you punch your car. j/k

I think its mostly the resonance. If you add resonators it will go away. Resonators take away sharp high pitch noises in the exhaust, mufflers remove low pitch deep noises.
