Default Oxygen sensor fails twice in two days

Hey guys,

I had my serivice engine light on, and the delership siad that it was because of a failed oxygen sensor. They ordered the part and replaced it. Within a day the light came back on . I took it to the dealer and they said that the O2 densor had failed again and were ordering me a new one again.

has this happned to any one else, and does any one have any suggustions

Thanks

obviously something is burning it out, it simply doesnt "fail" twice in 2 days. id tell them to check out the ecu and do a voltage drop across it. if its putting to much voltage across the sensor it will burn it out. how does the car run?

I would be surprised if the root cause is the oxygen sensor, or even that the sensor in there now is bad. I would bet on the circuitry (shorted wire, loose connector, bad ground) or maybe an air leak in the air intake system. Might want to look to see that there's no leaks in the hoses or air ducts. I can't remember for sure but I think that I read on this board a while back that some people who put on aftermarket intake systems had problems with oxygen sensor error codes. If all the dealer is doing is reading the code, and ordering an oxygen sensor, then they're skipping a few checks they should be making, especially since the first sensor didn't cure the problem. I don't know that a problem with the oxygen sensor would be noticeable when driving, but if your state has an emmision control test, you'd most likely flunk it if the oxygen sensor is bad.

i replaced all four o2 sensors (over 150$/each retail) in my wife's 00 Mercedes SUV myself and the code never went away after reset. Took it in to a mercedes tech and he replaced the MAF (400$) and fixed the problem. The tech says that 02 sensors in Mercedes hardly need to be replaced anyway.

Are you using K&N oiled air filter? Over-oiled air filters could cause sensor damage.
