Default Rearend changeout

I have located a rearend from the 6mt which is a 3.538 final ratio. I have the 5at @ 3.357 final ratio. The price is right and I am seriously pondering the swap.
The reason of course is for improved grunt down low with the auto. I really don't need the capability for sustained 150+ mph, tho I did run 153mph one time just to go there. With the higher (numerically) gears, it was easier than I assumed it would be. I understand the mileage will drop using the lower gears from the 6mt, but I don't expect that to be a large factor with this small of a numerical increase.
Anyone know of any unseen difficulties here? ECU, etc. I have the touring w/o VDC so that is not a concern. I'm not too concerned about the speedo error that may arise either, but not sure if I am missing something unseen.

Any other thoughts? Regards, Jim

Default Ooops!

I meant "higher gears", not "higher numerically" in my initial post. Hope it is clear

Your Speedometer will be off, if you have NAV it will be effected (although it can be adjusted) and your ABS system will also be effected a bit. Otherwise, I see no other issues. You will need to correct your speedometer using a modified ECU or piggy back speedo-ecu adjuster.

I plan on getting rear gears when I do my ECU tuning.

Where did you find the rear gears from a manual? I wonder how much they would cost if ordered from Nissan.

I don't see any problem with the ECU. It shouldn't affect anything in regards to a viscous setup. Back in the day a lot of people were doing rearend swaps from the TT rearend to the N/A rearend for an avg of .2-.5 second savings. =) I'm pretty sure the only mod was the removal of the HICAS setup.... so yah, shouldn't affect anything. It's not like the EVO active yaw control. Unless Nissan is just plain CRAZY~~

Would the ABS systems in the Z32 and Z33 be very different? I don't remember that being a problem. How would it be affected?

How did you wind up with a touring w/o VDC?

Effected due to the speedo error. ECU thinks the wheels are spinning at a faster speed then they are.

By the way, I just realized that going from a 3.357 to a 3.538 is not going to make much of a difference! Perhaps you're better off waiting for some aftermarket gears at say 3.73 or even 4.10.

hmmm... bet your kickin yourself now for getting an auto... whyd you do it? I mean the 6mt touring is what? 2000 or 2500 more? and you got VDC, TPM, 18" rims, and the proper gearing 6mt tranny, no to mention you still have to do labor.

if you dont mind all that, then sure why not. shouldnt mess anything but the speedo. not sure what ABS would care, it just knows the speed of the tires, I dont think it has a clue what the engine RPMs are.

Default Why auto?

This question comes to the top often, but there are very good reasons for both choices IMHO. I do not mean to sound defensive, but why on earth did you choose a manual tranny? Bet you're kickin yourself for now for getting a manual, eh? See how ludicrous that sounds from your vantage point?
In my case I bought the auto on purpose with much forethought. I have a physical anomoly within my right hand that disallows prolonged use of a manual. Secondly, my wife will drive my car on occasion and she is a defiantly anti-manual "row it yerself" kind of lady and I respect that. Thirdly, I am on the road a LOT and presently am showing almost 13,000 miles on my auto Z. I am VERY grateful I have not had to punch the clutch all those miles over these last three months! And you have how many miles? Sorry, I had to ask......
Nor would I castigate you for your choice of interior color or kind of wheel YOU chose to put on your Z. It is a matter of personal choice in my mind, and in my case, real factors dictated auto over manual for me.
Even tho this thread has (had) nothing to do w/manual vs. auto, I realize the auto gives up some horsepower in exchange for (my) comfort and less strain on the drivetrain and engine due to its inherent smoothness over the manual. This is why I am going to switch out the rearend, to gain back a bit of pull that the auto gives up, tho not that much loss, but a loss nevertheless.
Hope this explains why I think the AT5 is great and why I am "not kickin myself for getting an auto". Regards, Jim

oh sorry, I may have come off wrong.

I wasnt saying there was anything wrong with auto, I dream of an auto when I sit in traffic.

but your talking about getting a 6mt... arent you? I mean you cant swap transmissions from day to day.... so I assumed you were making a permanent switch to manual... I think we're both misunderstanding each other.

He's talking about the rear gears only, not the whole transmission.
