Default Final solution to rocks chips

Hello everyone,

After reading about the stone-chips, and looking at the havoc that my brand new Super Black hood and bumper are going through, I wanted to go for a 3M clear bra.

But I just found out that the cost for one of those is far more than getting the hood and bumper repainted.

So call me crazy, but I am getting new paint for the hood, bumper and fenders, 2 or 3 coats of super black and at least 4 coats of clear. Nice thick coats of paint, under nice thick coats of clear. That should teach them rocks a lesson

I'll be sure to post before and after pics.

Cheers everyone

I've got over 6K miles on mine and not a single chip yet. I just keep 3 seconds of space between me and the car in front.

Exactly, and most of them are from the freeway, following those semis carrying gravel, etc. Watch out for them hitting bumps, rocks start flying everywhere, lol.

Is that possible? Can apply multiple coats of OEM paint? You are talking big $$$ bucks.

Well it does cost a lot to get a 3M film here, I'd be looking at around 1000 USD for bumper, hood and fenders.

Why should it cost alot of $$$$? I was thinking of the same thing but dont know that much about painting. Multiple coats would help I think seeing it seems to be paper thin.

Because of the process. With old techniques you apply enamel coats and wet sand between coats. The same applied to top coats of clear lacquer. Many show cars are painted this way.

New painting methods are different. I don't know if they allow multiple coats.

Today instead of having to wait for the paint to dry, then wetsand to add coats all you do now is wait for the paint to flash off when applying the paint in the booth you can add many coats for the thickness you do not wetsand the basecoat anymore you apply the clear after the base has flashed off and you can do the same with the clear you just wait for the clear to flash before adding another coat. after all is said and done you go back and wet sand and then buff..... thats pretty much the process nowadays...
