Default whats the deal with 287 & rev up engines?

So i'm in the market for a Z...debating between the 287s and the rev ups...so whats the real deal about these engines? I mean, I'm leaning more towards the 287 since I can probably pick up a used 03 base for like 19k or less...and slap on some Mrev mods and call it a day...

1. but supposedly the 06 models came with upgraded suspension? is that much more refined than the older models?

2. and i know the 06 models came with the VTC on exhaust and 7k limiter...is the VTC on the exhaust even necessary? I'm planning to go full bolt ons and engine tuning...but my main focus is to learn how to auto-x/road course...does VTC exhaust give noticeable gains over pre-VTC exhaust?

3. Anybody have the link between the different MREVs and all those acronyms...i read a few and it's confusing as heck

thanks ya'll!

Your in cerritos... Make a drive out to performance nissan in Duarte 91010 and we can talk Z all day... Or can always give me a call during business hours...

Basicly... If you are in the market for a 06 Z then all you have to worry about is if you want Manual or Auto... If you want manual you will get the 300HP motor... Auto you get the 287...

The REV-UP (Which is what NISSAN calls it) is the motor with the variable timing on both intake and exhaust cams rather then only the intake like the 287 motor...

The suspension on 06 does ride a bit smoother then the 03-05... but, most of us on here change our suspensions anyway

Thanks Jason...I really appreciate the offer! I've heard about you throughout the forums and on the radio...I'll be sure to stop by your dealership if I ever get the chance...

oh btw jason, are you affiliated in the west coast section in this forums? I haven't browsed there yet (I wanna learn more about Z engines/chassis)....but I was wondering if you are planning to have any meets coming up? Perhaps I can tag along and check out some of the rides? And see what owning a Z is all about and learning from different members...and different setups!

I go to meets every now and then...

its always good to go to meets and hang out with other Z owners and get their input on the things they have done to their cars...

Unfortunatly I sold my Z a few months ago... But I got over 68000 miles and its value in mods of memories!

The 287 horsepower engine has 287 horsepower. The 300 horsepower engine has 300 horsepower.

Periodically Nissan tweaks the 350Z suspension making minor changes. I wound not refer to the 2006 suspension as upgraded just different.

The link for Motordyne Engineering is motordyne.com.

They tweaked little things.

All the 06's get the rev-up motor, HID's, LED taillights, more cupholders, other little compartments in the interior, and the new rims.

The 06's have better top end than the 03-05's too.

+1, the '07 i supposed to have the HR Engine. Most folks are guestimating 315-320hp on it. Jason @ performance can hook you up with a pre-order i am certain.

yeah i've seen a few threads all over the internet about the vq35hr....it seems pretty promising...but i wonder if it will come standard on base 350Z? man, i wonder if the g35 crowd will get this upgrade as well

and they say the tq will go up too, with the HR version...possibly solving the problem with rev up motors and their torque loss..

I'm not sure I could just waiting for the 07 if their main difference is 10 bhp, plus a huge depreciation as soon as you drive it off the lot.

its all relative. 20hp here and there may not matter to some.
i dont know whether itll come on the new base Z, but the 07 G35 sedan will have the engine and its likely the coupe will also, as the coupe has always kept pace with the Z in terms of engine used.

Too a point I agree with you, but the Difference between 287hp and 320hp is pretty significant. (Many people spend thousands of dollars to get 320 at the crank). I would say the Torque is at or greater than 300 as well on the new motor. That leaves the door wide open to get the car to NA HP levels equal to a stage 1 supercharger kit on a 287. (350ish Crank, making a 10% instead of a 25% Gain roughly) We may even see some tuners hit 300whp with the HR Motor without breaking the bank.

Add that will all of the suggested internal upgrades and you have the possibility to tune it a lot safer than the 287 or 300.

yeah i fully agree with you - i was comparing the vq35hr to the revup motor before. in any case to many not modding the new engine will be nice but probably nothing major (coming from the revup), and that was my point.

coming from a nonrevup this will probably be a pretty significant improvement.

in any case, this new motor will probably provide the torque of the nonrevup, with a wider powerband than even the revup. combine that with the best breathing to date and i am hopeful that we'll be able to get 300whp out of this new motor with i/p/h/e

Everybody talks about this hp difference, but what about there being a weight change. It may go up 20 hp, but also 200 lbs or something.

I rather keep my 04 Z and just add a ST for about 7k installed and have 400hp at the crank than purchase a car for 10K more than mine is worth, with no major improvements other than about 20hp...

Anybody know the pricing for the '07 Z? What's it gonna start at like 32k?

Although it is possible, I dont see how they can add much more weight. 200lbs is pretty significant too, and they have added that much more in past models. I think a lot of the 2006's weight gain was from the bigger brakes and added sound deadening. Since those are pretty much the norm now, I dont think they will really do that much more for the 2007.

As for price, I cant really see them upping the price more than 2-5%, UNLESS the Revvup is offered on some models and the HR is offered on exclusive models.
