whats the deal with 287 & rev up engines?
Actually the 06 models got the added weight from all the new parts such as the sound deadening, bigger brakes, all the new interor pieces, the revised(softer) suspension, and the rims<--- probably the heaviest change. The new 06 are a joke (no offense to 06 drivers). Nissan wanted to market the car to a broader audience so thats why they added all those new features. They made the Z soo softer and uglier. Take a look at the curb weight diffrerence between the 03-05 and the 06 models. All of them have gone up between 100-400lbs. Now remember the Z is a high performance sports car. And when it comes to performance, weight is the enemy. Yes they have 300hp and a 7k redline and they dyno 10whp than non rev-ups that is probably the only adavantage. 300 crank hp can be had on the 287 Z by adding i/p/e. Get a reflash and rev to 7100 all day. That extra 10 whp wont help the 06 models when you factor in the weight. Also about the new Z with the Vq35 HR, the previous model Z's come in at 3100lbs. The new Z will likely be 3500lbs if Nissan continues with what they are doing like the 06.
So the outcome will be
03-05Z 287-300hp 3100lbs= 07 VQHR 3500lbs in straight line
03-05 287-300hp 3100> 07 VQHR 3500 in corners.
So if you wan a rev-up try looking for a 05 Track model. That car doesnt have the added weight of the 06 models and still has the rev-up motor. If Nissan can make the 07 Z weigh like the 03-04 Z's with the new HR engine, then they will be back on top again. I wouldn't mind revving to 7500 and hearing how the vq will roar...

you guys are forgeting that if this thing revs to 7500rpm then it certainly will have power up there which means a broader powerband.
if this car gains no weight i bet you see low 13's or better in the 1/4
from good drivers

Im getting tired of saying this over and over but Ill say it again. 06' Z's DO NOT WEIGH 200lbs more than earlier models. I never thought they did, and at a recent track day we weighed about 10-15 Z's back to back on the same scale with no driver. The 06' Z's were right on par with the weight ranges of other Z's, we had lighter earlier year Z's and heavier earlier Z's so that myth has been busted.

I have a feeling the new HR engine is going to be something special. Perhaps Nissans best engine until the GTR beast is unveiled.
I've always loved Nissans VK V8. I thought it had everything the VQ lacked (upper RPM power, great smooth feel etc)
I own a non revup Z and yes it's stock
However I have always felt like it could use some upper rpm pedigree. It feels like it's going to grenade, and one of the biggest complaints about the engine *justified or not* is the blandness of the engine...
I think this HR engine is going to be great, and offer a real special unique feel to it.
If you have held out this long and can afford it, you really should hold out until the HR comes out, at least at that point if you don't decide on the HR the 06 revups will be even cheaper, and the non revups will be even cheaper.
I think Nissan is going to take one of their most used engines and offer a more european rpm powerhouse..
7,400 rpms. That is a reason enough to trade up. Maybe I could free up some NA power and make the engine breath a little better, but I'd rather havean 80% new engine any day IMO

I hope the forecast won't be too terribly bleak as we get closer, and start hearing some solid price points. I'm shooting for the GTR myself. Yeh I'd like a few bells and whistles, but won't mind if I can't obtain the fully loaded model. I'm no material *****
, just ain't that shallow or empty inside. My Z is a'right, just looking forward to feeling real power again, and I want a true manuel gear box. Ain't got the stick, ain't worth a frick. Economically speaking, should be able to swing it. Lots of us I'd guess in the same place, grabbing the brass ring that is GTR may be living a little beyond our means. That's ok if car's worth it. Better than being some dude daydreaming out loud over his 25cent bowl of ramen or whatever, lol. Don't forget insurance costs
