Just to let ya know... I changed some of the options on the site because it was performing like crap (sloooow). I am looking into what is going on right now and will post an update when I know. I am still looking to move this site to it's own dedicated box... just have to find the right rate so it doesn't kill us a few months after moving the site.

all fixed. Remember, the more images that are posted, the slower the site gets. In other words... if you take a file that is 100k and imagine it being viewed 20-30 times in a row, all the hwile different images are being viewed.... well, that eats bandwidth. We can afford this of course, but it slows down the box is all. I have requested that they add more ram to the box as well.... so that might help.

a wireless connection, eh? Think me and my laptop might do a little drive by surfing ;->. Make sure you have that wireless network nice and secure. A little sniffing could give someone with a wireless network card some really great info in regards to what kind of accounts and privelideges you're serving up. Besides, you never know what kind of road trips I might be thinking about taking once I get my Z. ;->

Don't sweat it Rain, most hackers are a joke. Wired magazine did a piece a few months back on hackers. They pointed out the really good hackers, aren't malicious. They get in, snoop, get out. They also only go after big fish, not small fish. The "hackers" that give the term a bad name are the idiots that think their little hacker program they downloaded will get them in and out without traces.

Thus far in life online, I have had three people attack me or my servers that I was working with.

All three were caught and what's funny is that it wasn't hard at all. It's great when you call the Police is someone's town, speak with their lead investigator on cyber crimes and then fax them server logs (proof) of what has transpired. Then they fax you the forms, you fill them out, sign, fax back... a few hours later, Skippy is in a world of hurt and in need of legal advice. All because he thought he was untouchable.

Well, depending who you talk to... there are several *good* firewalls out there. I would recommend going with the one most of the computer industry, such as Zdnet.com and Cnet.com recommend (as well as many, many others)... that's Zone Alarm Pro 3.0. The downside of Zone Alarm is that if you forget your password, you're screwed. I know a guy that tried to get around his own firewall, he tried to uninstall it without the password he set (cause he forgot it)... he screwed his system really good. haha

http://www.zonelabs.com/index.html is their site. if you set it up right, when other *hackers* come a callin on your system, they get a not connected message. You are in complete stealth mode and they can't hack what they can't see/ping/sniff/probe/scan.. haha

It's great stuff.

Sure, you can go with Norton, or Black Ice or a few others... and they're all very good, but nobody gets the unanimous decision in the magazines like Zone Alarm Pro does.

I find your laughter a little insulting...even though I wasn't suggesting you should beware of one such as myself. Before you completely rule out hackers as benign, you should check out how many billions of dollars were lost last year by things as simple as Distributed Denial of Services. Have you checked out War Driving? It is a growing pass time that has a large, if not overly knowledgable following and if a wireless network isn't properly administered, some one with a laptop and a wireless nic can listen in on even a private LAN.
Hacking these days is no longer a knoweldgable person sitting at their computer, visiting one computer at a time. The hackers that have specialized in something write scripts that script kiddies can use. These scripts are all automated so the guy or girl doesn't even really have to know what they're doing. One kid can "own" thousands of computer and can use those as a jumping point. With just one or two jump points, the hacker can be untraceable. Law enforcement can ask an isp for their logs of who was using that IP, but the chance of following all the links is hardly ever successful unless it's an idiot that hacks a server from his/her own computer.
Sorry for the description, but it just bothers me that you laugh so heartily at the possibility of hacking. Why would the world spend so much money on Intrusion Detection Systems, Firewalls, and Anti-virus software if there was nothing to worry about? How effectively will a firewall protect you if you don't know how to set it up properly.
