Default major design flaw

The fricken gas cap is on the wrong side of the car!
Are the nissan designers retarded?
Isn't it obvious that the gas cap should be on the drivers side.

And they can't use the antenna excuses that it would cost more, weigh more or whatever since clearly the gas cap has to go somewhere, why not put it in the right place.

This is the last straw, the antenna fiasco and now this,
I'm canceling my pre-order.

Oh wait, now I realize why it can't go on the drivers side,
the antenna is in the way, of course! it's so logical.

Actually the real reason they did this is so that it is on the
drivers side in Japan! And they know that those stupid americans are already used to the cap being on the wrong side
on their stupid american cars so let the Japanese customer have it the right way and keep more parts the same for left and right hand drive.

Well NISSAN you didn't fool me I see right through your sneaky plot to favor the Japanese consumer over Americans!

It's very interesting you think it's on the wrong side of the car. I drive a German car and an American car and both of the gas caps are on the passenger side of the car. As a matter of fact, I've also driven a Honda and it's gas cap is on the driver's side. Makes you wonder how they come up with which side to put the thing on. Isn't the gas cap on the Vette in the center of the rear end?

Just a thought.

My 280ZX gas cap is on the passenger side. I prefer it there now, it seems I can always find an empty pump without having to turn all around.

My first post too, I've been lurking for a couple of months!

Oddly enough, I just had this argument with a co-worker yesterday.

In my opinion, the passanger side is the CORRECT side for the gas cap.

Why?

Simple.

So when you pull into the gas station, and get out to fill up the tank, you're not opening your driver door INTO THE GAS PUMP.
Talk about door dings a plenty.

Nope, Nissan actually made the right choice, following in the footsteps of Audi, BMW, Mercedes, etc.

I never thought of that. Sounds logical enough to me.

The passenger side is the only correct choice.

Whoever is lucky enough to ride with you in your Z should pay their dues by pumping your gas!

Default Cap?

Buzz, they wanted to make sure you did'nt poke your eye out with the antenna while pumping gas! (a lawyer made them put it there)

Here in nashville a while back there was a case where a driver was fueling his/her car on the divers side. They decided to go back into the car to get something and when they exited and shut the door BOOM. The news reported that static from the driver shutting the door sparked the fumes and caused an explosion. I like the gas on the other side for this reason. Just dont go popping the trunk while we fill, it's closer than the door!

Lucky...In Jersey, we don't pump our own gas. We just sit in the car and let the guy/girl do it for us. We're lazy ova' here!

That's what I'm talking about. I've lived in Jersey all of my life and have only pumped my own gas once, on a trip to NY.

The reason the gas cap is on the passenger side? A simple safety issue. If your car were to run out of gas, you would naturally pull over to the right shoulder. When you refill the tank (after the inevitable 3-mile hike) you are not exposed to traffic--a much higher danger than most realize. German cars have had this feature for years.

Makes sense for USA and Germany. What about right-hand drive countries? If the gas cap is still on the right side then your explanation is shot. Does the JDM 350Z have the gas cap on the left side? What about British Beemers?

In japan, is the Altezza gas cap on the left side?, it is here

Yeah, I do that every once in a while. The gas station curbs are always higher than normal with a metal lip. And I always seem to park so that my door edge opens into the metal railing at the end of the pumps. I hate having to squeeze out the door!

What are you all talking about?

The Z is so awesome it does not need gas. The gas cap is just for show. I am no expert but it seems pretty obvious...Dah!

It's quite simple. For all the lonley Z drivers. The gas cap/tank is on the passenger side so when you fuel up the weight of the gas will balance with the weight of the driver.

See how simple that was.
