So let me restate: Your "new" car is 2 years old.
John, I'm not trying to debate semantics, so whether its "new", or just "unused", its still 2 years old. And I'm sure you're not going to take the position that a "new" 2 year-old car has the same financial value as a "new" current model.
Even current model year cars generally decline in value as the end of the model year approaches. An '06 in Nov '06 is not worth as much as it was in Jan. '06.
And a few years down the road, when he sells or trades his "new" '04, he will find out it really is an '04, even though it was purchased "new" in '06.
They start to depreciate as soon as their built.

no car is worth anywhere near what you pay for it when you buy it. it doesnt matter if its a 2004, a 2006, or a 1996.
with what that 2 year old new car was sold to him for and the fact that the mileage is always going to be ATLEAST 25k miles under where the mileage for a 2004 will have him able to trade out well before you are with the 2006 bought the same day. his car is worth 3700 more than any other 2004 books for just because of mileage plus he bought the car 8k under sticker. a wise person would see he probobly made the best investment move as far as buying a car goes.....

I already acknowledged that it may well have been a good buy.
But all other things being equal, an '04 model is NOT worth as much (financially) as an '06.
Assuming your used car manager appraised and '04 with 10K, and '06 with
10k, all other things being equal, would he allow the same price for both?
Of course not.

of course not. but he did not pay nearly as much either.
buying at 8k under sticker and with the mileage add he would get for being 25k miles under where any other 04 would be will make it easier for him to trade than it would for the guy with the 06. (as a matter of fact he probobly has equity in his trade, where as the guy with the 06 is most likely upside down)
we can argue all night over this. but the fact is im in the bussiness, and you Talk about "what you think the bussiness is about"
i do this 20 times every day, day in and day out. and you do this maybe 10 times in your life.

John, you are, of course, correct. To Bill, I very much realized that I would not get top dollar when I went to get rid of the car, however, because of my initial cost factor, I don't really need to. Also, I have a tendency to keep cars (I currently have a little fleet of 4 cars). Should I hang on to it or even just drive it into the ground (hate to think of that, I really like this car) then purchasing a 'new 2 year old' car is less of issue. When I'm ready for my next car, I would absolutely follow this purchase protocol again.

Thank you for finally admitting this is possible.

Great thread! John, thanks for bringing out some clarity in this subject. I had bought my 04' touring redline roadster auto trans (no nav) with 6450 miles on it for $37,000 with 1% financing for 5 years with zero down (April 2005). Car came with four 18 inch rims and a nismo catback exhaust. Relatively, not sure whether it was a great deal but I figure it was a great overall price since the total price after five year of finance charge was right for me. During 04/05 timeframe, I would say that my perception of the 350Z was that of a value sport car considering that when it came out in 02/03; dealership was selling it for $10,000 over MSRP.........and people was buying it at that price. Now it seems like some people's mindframe of the 350z is....."hey, I got one of the best value sport car on earth.....and I got it for the price of a high end Honda Accord?" We're sure making it sound like the 350z is the poor's man porsche.
