Default Should I get a 350z?

I am a 15 year old torn in my decision for a car. I am wondering wether I should press for a used 350z, or settle for a Scion TC. While I know the TC would be a great car for a 16 year old, I still cannot overlook the value of the Z.

Note that I am not one of those cocky kids that would race on the streets. I am fairly level-headed, and am completely straight-edge. While I'm competetive in sports and somewhat popular, I'm still nerd and do not like to participate in any illegal activities. I guess being raised by a strict Asian grandmother can do that to you.

I know that a Z would be outrageous for an average 16 year old, and I agree. But my father just completed a deal in Las Vegas that should be netting him in the millions, and so he told me the money for a car is not an issue. He just doesn't want me to race, nor does he want to let the money get to my head. He's also afraid that if I get a nice car, I will be too worried about the upkeep of the car rather than enjoying its intended purpose, to take me from point A to point B.

I have taken all this into consideration, but I would still like a 350z. He specifically told me that if I want a sports car, I would have to prove my responsibility. And so, now I have to play on the basketball team, golf team, and run track. He recommends I play football as well. I also have to join at least one club, and maintain my 4.0. I think that the prospect of attaining a 350z will allow me do to all of that.

What is my motivation for getting a 350z? It is probably the same as everyone else here. It is a steal for its money. It looks amazing, at least to me, and performs just as well. And, if I buy a used 2003-2004, then I could get it for just under 20k, perhaps almost the same price as a new TC. And, it has two seats. While most people would want 4, I love the aspect of having two seats so I have an excuse to not waste gas driving people around. That seat will be reserved for my gf, or a best friend.

All in all, I think I'm ready to accept the responsibility. However, since almost all of the members on this board are much older than I, I believe that your input could greatly influence my decision in a positive way. Please feel free to ask any question as well, especially if it helps you help me in my decision.

You seem like a responsible kid, so I have no qualms of 'irresponsibility'; but I do believe that Z would not make a good first car. Why? It is much too powerful for someone without any driving experience. That, combined with the rear wheel drive can be a recipe for disaster if you don't know what you're doing.

I would suggest getting the tC (great car for the money, by the way) and waiting a few years before getting a Z.

Congrats on your academic and extra-curricular success, by the way. You will do well in your life, I am sure.

plain and simple 350z is to much power for a 16 year old.

And congrats to your pops but im sure most of us dont care about how wealthy you are.

A whole lotta car for a 15 year old. Too tempting to put your foot into it. I'm sorry, but as a father I would say no Z for you. Scion TC is a cool looking and much safer car as your first at 15.

I see your point. I must admit I don't have much driving experience, and I guess that is one of the things my dad was worried about. How difficult it is to drive? My dad has a G35, which I have been told is similar to the 350z, and I have driven it on occasion. One of the problems that I faced while driving it was that it was much more responsive than my grandmother's old 1996 Escort. I pressed on the pedal a bit too much and almost hit a mailbox. However, it wasn't too bad after I got used to it.

This brings me to another concern. My dad was talking about the maintenance as well. How hard is it to maintain a car like this? Also, it it even worth the trouble? I still really want this car, but I'd like to know more before unintentionally putting myself through hell.

Edit: To rmatic09, I'm sorry if I came off as conceited, I wasn't trying to be boastful at all. I just wanted to let everyone know that money isn't the main concern.

2nd... i felt pretty responsible with mine too... BTW i got mine when i was 19... and more than likely YOU WILL stick your foot into it... it's just curiosity...

but all it takes is that one time... i would say get a cheaper less powerful car for your first then after a year or two... if the offer is still up... take it... prove you're responsible behind the wheel first... saying it and doing it is two different things...

You do sound responsible, and if your father wants to see some initiative with resposibility, I say give it to him, and get the Z. My first car was a mustang 5.0! I was always responsible, just dont get caught up in the whole F&F shiet...your around the age good luck

LegionnareZ, I see your concern. Throughout the entire time in the G35, I was careful and cautious. However, as with any new activity, I realize within 2 years that caution might slowly ebb away. Maybe your idea of proving my responsibility through a TC would be better, or perhaps driving my grandmother's Escort for a year. And if I mess that one up, it'll be much less costly to replace?

listen man... just get the Z, try not to kill yourself. you sound pretty responsible and youre probably not one of those 16 year olds who's just going to pedal to the metal. Get the Z enjoy it because later on your going to be wondering what it would have been like if you would have had a Z. I know people here might think that's stupid but cmon you know you want this car, you didnt get on this forum for no reason. Just get it and enjoy it and dont go to crazy.

just buy the Z, u seem like a decent guy
i think most of these guys are older and probably just dont want someone young to own that type of car that they drive
i bet half these guys had crazy cars too when they were young
just be aware that it is a difficult car to handle without any experience especially if ur switching to that type of car from say a honda or in ur case, ur grandma's escort

I'd also like people to see how I am. I can't drink alcohol, or take any drugs because my mother is schizophrenic and may contribute to the chance I may become schizophrenic. I also don't go out that much, because I have to take care of my grandparents. They are suffering from cancer and arthritis. That is why I have to be home by 6, and I can't go anywhere besides to practice golf or basketball on weekdays. The reason why I have to be home by six is because thats when the buses stop running to my house, and my grandma can't drive at night. Note that alot of my friends do drugs, and have goaded me to use them, but so far I haven't. Nor do I ever really feel like I'd want to. The further I feel like I would go is drinking wine with friends and family as I get older.

Edit: Wow you people respond fast. Thank you for saying that you think I'm responsible enough. I hope I am, but you can never be too sure.

Frost 44, get the Z, I can only imagine what my high school days would have been like If I owned a hott a$$ car like the Z. The girls will be all over you! Like I said you seem smart and responsible...do it! I know this guy who is a sophmore , who drives Z roadster, he's responsible, and he gets so much play from the girls....screw the drugs and alcohol....its all about the girls!

Hmm, your responses make me feel that maybe I could handle getting a Z. But, have any of you had a similar car as your first car? I would like to know the experience, and if things happened that you hadn't first forseen.

Edit: to gabez33. Haha I wish I could say the same, but I can't really go out with anyone unless my grandmother approves. And its hard to find someone that I like, that my grandmother would like too. Not to mention not too many girls my age would have the patience to deal with her. I have to respect her wishes though...she did raise me.

Oh and the most important thing. How is the trunk space? I need to be able to fit my golf clubs in there 24/7, and so a moderate size trunk is important.

I wouldnt spend 20K on a first car .. You will eventually crash it.. Everyone does.. Buy a semi bucket and save and in 2 years buy a new car..
