I used to do that all the time in my old VW, I don't think it has anything to do with the Z's tranny...just something you need to get used to.

What about going from redline in 3rd back down into second because I missed 4th? It certainly didn't sound good, but the car still seems to be ok. Any ideas what I might have taken off the life of my tranny?

Yeah, I hadn't had the car that long, maybe 2 months at the time. I was doing a 1/4 mile run for probably the 5th time and was really getting after it. I threw her into 2nd by mistake. It felt and sounded to me like the clutch just slipped and never grabbed, but I don't know for sure. The clutch was only in about a second tops, as I put it in neutral as fast as I could. I was sick to my stomach for a week!

i don;t think slipping up once or twice is really going to hurt the car... but don't screw up too much... it might get costly...

but shifting from 3rd to 5th won't hurt your car... just as mentioned you won't accelerate much...

i even sometimes run 3rd to about 4K or 4.5K and shift to 5th... usually just around town or just getting on the freeway...

i use the lower gear to get going... then when i'm at the speed i need i shift into "overdrive" 6th... i've had the car a little over 1-1/2 years and no problems yet...

yeah it won't hurt your car. just when your shifting to third just make sure your not putting any directional pressure on it. when I first was learning stick my friend showed me that you have it in neutral and just push from the back of the shifter with a few fingers and it just pops in.

This is my first manual transmission car, and I've only missed a shift once. I found the gears quite easy to find when shifting. Not sure how this car compares to other in this aspect though.

I skip gears in this car when driving around town rather often. 3rd to 5th or 4th to 6th is very common. Won't do anything to the car.

If it happens more often, missing 3rd when going up or missing 4th when going down, just put the gear in neutral and push it straight up or down. Can't miss it that way. Just takes some more time, so less effective when trying to get away

You need to relax on the stick, it should center to 3 so when you go from 2nd to 3rd, push it forward, let it center and push it forward again.

exactly, the Z's shifter is quite stiff... it will always recenter itself when left in neutral... third and forth is just a matter of up or down then....

sounds like you're trying too hard... relax... lol
