Although i have read that the chatter when in neutral is normal, i was curious about the tranny whine? I have only had my Z for a couple days now and have noticed that when in gear it whines like a supercharger, or dry powersteering pump. But as soon as i push in the clutch it goes away at any speed. It shis normal?? P.S. She is an '03 with 31,000mi. Thanks!
I think as long as nothing is grinding, then its normal. My car whines at like 75mph and up, dealer says its normal, which is bs I think. Yeah the trannsmission is rough and noisy, but hey its no lexus. I just got used to it.

i've got a 03 track with about the same millage....two months ago they changed a few bearings in the transmission because it was chattering louder and louder at idle...one month later it is even worst, sometimes you could tell there are rocks spinning in the transmission at idle....then it started winninng in every gear...
now they say they will change the transmission...but they asked me to wait another 3 months so they could make a new waranty clame to nissan...no big deal...i'll wait
the key word is : third speed is sometimes very rough and notchy...... with all these problems you have a good chance of getting a new transmission.
bonne chance !...
